Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Joseph William Kennedy was born in Nacogdoches, Texas back in 1916 to Joseph and Mattie.  He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Teacher College receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at the University of Kansas where he was awarded a Master of Arts degree.  He entered the University of California, Berkley earing his Doctor of Philosophy.

After graduation he was an early recruit for the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico.  He was acting head of the Chemistry and Metallurgy Division, there was some concern as he was only 26 years old at the time.

After the war he was recruited as a professor at Washington University in St Louis, being installed as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry in 1946.  He continued in that capacity until his death in 1957, he was 40.

What you may not know about Joseph is that along with Glen Seaborg, Edwin McMillan and Arthur Wahl discovered plutonium, for the making of the Atomic Bomb.

Hello James - another name I might likely never know if not for your post.  A life cut short - I do wonder about that additional part of the story.

He died at 40?  Was he sick?  Did someone take him out because of what he was helping to make?

Good morning, James.... of course, as the Manhattan Project was top secret, it's no surprise that Kennedy's is not a name we know relative to the results of this project.

That's quite the discovery! Imagine what else he might have accomplished if his life had not ended at such a young age?!

Like it or not I am glad that that team was working for our side in that competition. No matter how you look at it there are no winners unfortunately.

I've read a book on the Manhattan project. Probably saved an additional 500,000 Americans from getting killed in that awful war.
