Joseph William Kennedy was born in Nacogdoches, Texas back in 1916 to Joseph and Mattie. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Teacher College receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at the University of Kansas where he was awarded a Master of Arts degree. He entered the University of California, Berkley earing his Doctor of Philosophy.
After graduation he was an early recruit for the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico. He was acting head of the Chemistry and Metallurgy Division, there was some concern as he was only 26 years old at the time.
After the war he was recruited as a professor at Washington University in St Louis, being installed as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry in 1946. He continued in that capacity until his death in 1957, he was 40.
