Gas Prices in Houston Have You Hanging Your Bills Out To Dry Like Dirty Laundry?

Houston is a Huge City in size.  By that, I mean land.  Suburbs make up a large portion of the City and many commute to work for 30 minutes or more.

With Gas Prices being high, everyone is feeling the pain at the pump.  No news there.  But how about other options to get to work?  We actually have quite a few options available to folks that have not been used as much until recent times.

Whether you live smack in the middle of the City, or out in the Suburbs like The Woodlands, I thought you may like to have a list of all of your Transportation options to help relieve your stress when you wait in traffic, or to help if you are considering Relocating here and need ideas of location.

Not only may these services save you money, they may also save time sitting in traffic on the way to and from work.  If you would rather Bike or Walk, the City has made it considerably easier for Inner Loop Residents to do that as well.

  • I'll start with The District otherwise known as The Woodlands Express on the North side of town.  The Woodlands Express is equivalent to a Metro service for Residents in and around with Three Park and Ride locations in the Community and one in Conroe.  They offer rides to various areas through town from Monday-Friday.  Click here for the website
  • VanPool has been around for many years.  This is a program where Residents in different areas 'share' the van and pool money to pay for the gas.  It has now merged with the Metro Program.  The advantage here is being able to find a group of people that work in the same location or nearby and at the same hours.  (This could be your neighbors if you like)  There are opportunities from Galveston to Conroe.  Click here for the website
  • Trek is one that is getting really popular now a days.  They specialize in taking folks to Greenway Plaza, Galleria area and Medical Center.  Each location is near another point of Transportation if you need to get Downtown by Light Rail or Metro.  The only restriction here is that there are minimal places to get on.  Check out the website to see if it is near you.
  • Metro Light Rail is a snazzy train that shoots down Main from just on the other side of 610 South near Reliant Park through Downtown near the University of Houston.  This could be a good opportunity to cut off Half of your Commute or more depending on where you live.  Click here for the website
  • The Metro Bus Program has become larger AND they are switching the buses over to Hybrid's next year!  There are numerous Park and Ride locations through out town and run until rather late at night if you work odd hours.  Click here for the website
  • I mentioned that you may be one that wants to bike to work.  There are over 345 miles of Bike Paths that connect in the City.  Want to exercise and commute at the same time?  Check out this website

This is only 6 options to help get your Bills off the Clothesline but there are many other options available for Residents and Homeowners in and around the City.  The Absolute BEST website that I have found to date with all of the options available is called Commute Solutions.  It's Fantastic!

So what are you doing?  Get those Bills back in your pocket!  Besides, it's also the GREEN thing to do.  If I missed a great service that you know of, please share in the comments.  Inquiring minds want to know.  :)

By the way, this post was inspired through a great discussion with @LaurieManny and @ChrisShouse.

HI Steph - great local information! I am one of those inquiring minds! I am hoping with the focus on green and the gas prices rising more municipalities will offer great options like those you have highlighted! This is a bookmark for certain for me and other relo's to the Houston area! Thanks for an informative and valuable post!

Hey Mary,  it hit me while commenting on Laurie's blog that I write about green and don't have anything about public transportation on my sites!  OMG!

Metro last week got permission from the City to extend 5 more Light Rail lines IF they can get Federal Funding.  That would be awesome.  Won't extend to The Woodlands though.

Steph that is wounderful that you have all that transportation available to you in the Houston area.  Too bad that Las Vegas does not.  It has not even finished the monorail from the strip to the airport.  I will do some research on the bus system and let my readers know about that.  By the way Steph, great post.

Hi Chris,

I was pleasantly surprised to see how much these systems have grown over the last couple of years.  I would bet that Vegas has some sharepool type programs.

There is one called NuRide that is National.  I'm not sure how I feel about it so I didn't add it here but you go to the site, put in where you want to go and it matches you up with someone.  So, you use your own car, split the mileage but somehow also get 'points' by sponsors which are usually corporations.  ????  Need more info but it would probably be an option for Vegas.  I used to be in the travel business...Vegas seems like a place that folks could drive a long ways to work. Wonder how gas prices are affecting the hospitality industry there.  (casino, hotel and restaurant employees)

Let me know on twitter when you get your post up.

Hi Stephanie,

Funny how things work out.  22 years ago I left New York; the number one reason was never wanting to take mass transportation again and to be quite frank, I still don't ever want to take it again.  Many years of mass transport stuffed into filthy overcrowded trains in NY was a major turn off. Having chains ripped off of my neck and having my butt grabbed as subway doors were closing were no fun either.  Leaning against a wall in the train my brand new white linen suit had graffiti across the back of it for the work day, and that doesn't account for the lewd acts one witnessed and was subjected to at off hours waiting on deserted platforms for trains that took too long to come.  The wear and tear on ones psyche having to take mass transport every single day was a nightmare for me. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to take a bus and 2 trains and being at the mercy of their breakdowns and delays, sometimes stuck in tunnels, between platforms, for very long periods of time.

Green?  The grass may seem greener on the other side.  So, we take people out of their cars and put them onto mass transportation.  Customer service being what it is today (lets not kid ourselves) and the attitude toward the masses in this country, is a recipe for a disasterous rise in crime.  The police can't even service the major metropolitan areas there is no way they will be able to police each and every station 24 hours a day.

I believe Arizona and Texas have gun laws that allow the public to bear arms if they are visible.  Perhaps this might work if the states actually allowed citizens the ability as well as the right to protect themselves.

Not trying to be negative here.  I agree that mass transport does seem to be the way to go here.  What I am saying is that it cannot be done the way it has in the past.  It just isn't safe.

Perhaps they should turn it over to Disney.  They did such a great job with the monorails in their parks and they just don't seem to have problems.

Check out this YouTube video of the train system in Japan.  Do you really think this would work for you? There were days in NY that felt this bad and the trains were usually almost this crowded.

Oh yeah, then there are the casualties, check out this video as well.

Steph:  Do you think it would be helpful to include Houston in your title? Like :Mass Transit Options in Houston or "Gas Prices in Houston...  Just a thought..

Hi Laurie,  LOL. :) Disney.  Actually, our public transportation is quite different than most places.  Pretty clean and get used a lot by everyone.  Being crammed in like sardines would totally get to me, but our light rail and share pool organizations do a good job.

Hey Rich,  Yes. :)  Thought about it last night but didn't do it, the title was already too long.  But changed now. Thanks.

Hi Lexi,  I have not purchased from Exxon in years.  Not because I'm boycotting them, I just haven't.

According to a recent study, Americans drove 11 BILLION miles less in March '08 than they did in March '07.  11 BILLION miles in ONE month we saved.  I do not believe a boycott would solve anything.  Conserving and not using as much gas, not being as dependent upon it will do more.  I personally do not want to wait a year for prices to decline, although I think it will be a lot longer than that.

IMO, if we start to get over our addiction to oil and gas, the prices will drop quicker trying to get us hooked again.

You should read the post that I link to by Laurie Manny.  It's a really good post.
