Sunrise At A Volcano  Haleakala Maui

Some years back, while on a vacation to the Hawaiian Islands we got up in the middle of the night to make the zig-zag drive to the rim of the Haleakala Volcano, a dormant area to see the sunrise.

We were forewarned to dress warmly as it was in the high 30's at the summit of the volcano. As the hues to the clouds started to change colors, we were rewarded for our patience.

We stayed up a couple of hours just to appreciate the views and it was as if we were on a lunar escape with the valley before us.

While on a helicopter tour of the island on that same trip we came across the largest bowl of fluff we had ever seen.

It was a most memorable trip and having the photos allows thst memory to last a long time.

Hi Ed:

We've been there as well, but did not do the early morning sunrise thing. Perhaps the next time! It's an amazing place and the drive up was awesome.

What stunning photos Ed. Larry and I try to catch as many sunrises and sunsets as possible. We would certainly enjoy seeing the Haleakala in person!

The Hawaiian Islands always find ways to amaze me.  I've visited 4 times, and each time there is something new and wonderful to see.

You had me at sunrise and that scene certainly doesn't disappoint.  When I think of volcanoes it reminds me of walking through Mauna Loa in 1984 and then watching it erupt just a couple of days later, so surreal.

Michael Jacobs   These were taken in the days of film and all my negatives are still be to had and also seen if you ask my wife.

Nina Hollander   That particular trip was one of the most relaxing I had ever taken.  So much so that when we got back home I quit my job as I could not take the aggravation of the place any longer.

Roy Kelley   In this current lifestyle, looking at vacation photos is a way to deflect fro the situation.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP   As noted above it is a way to get the cabin fever mindset out of the head.  Glad to share

Ed Silva - I agree! I have been gong back to my travel photos reliving the memories. Unloading boxes that came down from the attic got that old "cabin fever mindset," out of my head too!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE®   It is strange to be at the precipice of the volcano and look around and see the tops of the clouds below your feet.  Great shot!  A view of the lunar surface.

Jeff Dowler, CRS    pack the fur lined shorts for the early morning drive.  That drive was made even more interesting with sight seeing buses coming down and you're hugging the shoulder.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400   The location where you live is not very wide between the waters so a bit easier to get to the shoreline for a wonderful sunset

Brian England   On this particular trip when we were on the Big Island it had erupted again just a few weeks prior and lava was still flowing.  The copter pilot got us close enough to see down into the crater.  Those photos are for another post.
