Help Feed Hungry Greater Charlotte Neighbors In Need
Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops from all around the Charlotte metro area in Mecklenburg County will be "SCOUTING FOR FOOD" this coming Saturday, February 6th beginning at 9:00 AM. Hundreds of Boy Scouts across Mecklenburg and surrounding counties hung door tags this past Saturday ahead of Scouting For Food. Thousands will be participating in collecting donations on Saturday February 6th and Sunday February 7th.
Even in as affluent an area as Greater Charlotte, North Carolina, there are still too many families who go hungry as a result of economic crises, especially this year after a year of pandemic conditions. 130,000 Charlotte residents and one in five children in Mecklenburg County live in poverty. I was astonished to find out that North Carolina ranks in the top 10 for the nation’s hungriest states. Last year the Scouting For Food drive in the Charlotte metro area collected a record 278,000 pounds of food (18,000 pounds more than in 2019)!
Is Your Donation Bag Ready?
Local Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Scouts will be collecting food for Loaves & Fishes on February 6th from Charlotte neighborhoods (like mine). I already have a bag filled and waiting to be put on my front porch on February 6th for pickup (with more to fill). No reason to limit yourself to just one bag -- why not fill up a second bag for this terrific cause? Harris Teeter is having an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G promotion this week on pasta and canned vegetables. You could fill up several bags for less than $10.
All food collected by Charlotte Boy Scouts will be distributed by Loaves & Fishes through its pantry locations in Mecklenburg County. Loaves & Fishes provides a week's supply of groceries to families and individuals facing economic hardship/crisis.
In 2019 Loaves & Fishes providedgroceries to over 80,000 people in Mecklenburg County. Almost half of the recipients were children. In 2020 that number rose to over 120,000 and is expected to increase in 2021. Right now Loaves & Fishes are feeding some 2,000 people each week.
The Scouting For Food Drive is the largest single drive each year in support of the Loaves & Fishes pantries throughout Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
WHAT TO DONATE TO THE "SCOUTING FOR FOOD" DRIVE:
- Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc.)
- Canned fruit
- Canned pasta
- 100% real fruit juices
- Peanut butter
- Pork and beans
- Corn muffin mix
All canned and boxed foods are welcome. There's especially a great need for low sodium, low sugar, and low fat items. (No glass containers or frozen food, please.) Loaves & Fishes always needs personal care items and diapers in all sizes, as well.
So please be generous this year and contribute as much as you can to our neighbors in need. The need this year is greater than ever.

You can help support Loaves & Fishes throughout the year by adopting a pantry and/or conducting your own food drive or volunteering at its warehouse. Loaves & Fishes offers volunteer opportunities for both groups and individuals. And, of course, you can always make a monetary donation.
