This post is in response to the clickbait article that Rocky found dismay in and which lead to a wonderful AR challenge this month. I read the article and while I am offended by it, I am not offended that someone wrote this stuff since I have seen agents that unfortunately do these things. I am greatly offended by the agents that do these things and give the industry such a bad name. It is my belief that any agent that is found to be doing any of these things should be at a minimum reprimanded, perhaps even fined and if they continue to do them, they should have their license revoked. There should be a standard that is upheld and our associations, including NAR, should be doing that instead of participating in their own agendas, political or otherwise.

Now, to the positive stuff!!! Most agents will NEVER do anything that is discussed in the article, so consumers should be working with those agents and not the few bad seeds that are spoken about in the article. Consumers should demand representation from an agent that will not participate in any of those acts and there are plenty of great agents out there to work with.

I learned long ago that the media feels the need to sensationalize everything and that often leads to promoting things that are not true or at a minimum insinuating that they are without any facts to back it up. They do this because it gets people to pay attention and they get the clicks or views that drive their revenue. Long ago, I stopped watching the news, reading the news, or listening to the news because I knew that it was not just the facts. I hated all of the bad that was being spread by the news and the fact that people were being made out to be guilty without any hard facts or proof. The news would insinuate things and publicly convict the actions of likely innocent people and that did not sit well with me since I saw it ruined the lives of some people even though they were later proven to be innocent. As you can tell, I am not a fan of the news, haha. I don't know why we can't just have the facts and be able to come to our own conclusions. Oh, wait, I do know why, it is money, the facts don't pay as well as sensationalized drama does...

I hate that this has turned into a negative post but I believe it still adheres to the guidelines of the challenge since one of the choices is to write about the media and respond to the article, which I have.

To end on a positive note though, I know there are so many great agents that I interact with daily in the Rain that would never do any of the things mentioned in the article and always treat their client's transactions as if it were their own. Kudos to all of the great agents out there!!!

I specialize in the East Valley of the Phoenix Metro area - Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, Queen Creek, and San Tan Valley.

Brian,

Negative news sells ads and pays salaries.  Ron and I have a friend who has often said that if all the good news were published, they would be very little space of the negative stuff.  A

Hello Brian - it's often easy to blame media for sensationalism today but if we think back in history, we see evidence of somewhat(at least) dubious behavior in many aspects of everyday life.  What occurs "out there" will or won't happen but what "goes on" inside us is where we have control.

Admittedly, I am not always "in or under control" therefore I often "brand" or self-identify  as a work-in-progress.

Are there arguments to the contrary?  Sure.   And that's part of the lesson.  Today and everyday.  Sermon over.

Hi Brian  click bait is what makes them money. That's why.  I don't pay attention to the media and I certainly don't pay attention to the negative click bait articles.  Years ago there was a sales coach that wanted us to use 'click bait' titles in articles.  Not happening kids!

Brian- well done!  I think that the news that we grew up with is a thing of the past. there are very few true journalists these days...just newsreaders. 24 hour news has added to this because they have to figure out how to fill those 24 hours and keep the viewer focused on them.

Every profession has some bad apples and the rotten ones are the ones who tend to make the news.

Brian unfortunately it has gone from lies and sensationalism, to trying to punish and cancel out anyone without a liberal opinion.  It is like, today they come for me, but tomorrow they will come for you.

This article is really a good representation of the terrible quality of some writers who claim to be reporters.

On another larger note - Sadly, like most professions, many excellent reporters and journalists are being thrown under the bus with over-generalizations that all the media is biased.  It's simply not true. However, there is a very dangerous trend in this country to discredit credible reporting if it doesn't suit a particular agenda. That terrifies me. The trend to create new "supposedly credible" sources for unproven and often false allegations is alarming.

Hello Brian England - now that my administrative comment is out of the way,  I want to thank you for your post and for participating in Rocky Dickerson Share the Love challenge.

While it may not ooze with "a spoon full of sugar" it does represent your perspective and truth about the media and the many great real estate agents!

WOW! You NAILED it, Brian! We are definitely like-minded and I do hope that with the new very vanilla president we have, those who have become news junkies will stop clicking that bait too! They have given the media the support they needed to keep sharing their opinion and pushing their agenda instead of reporting FACTS!

Another problem is - who is the fact-checker? Cancelling out half of the nation, saying they said something that is not factual, yet the never call out the other half of the nation for spewing falsehoods...much less call out the media!

We are definitely on the same wavelength here Debe Maxwell, CRS and it drives me crazy not knowing what is real and what is not.  It's like the old adage of believing in something so much that in your own mind it is the truth, even though it isn't the actual truth.

Hi Brian England, I agree with you. I can't watch the news anymore, for a short while, I stayed away from social media but I don't want my friends and past clients to think I'm no longer in the business. Sadly, we are at a point where if our ideology is not the same as "theirs", we are horrible people that should be canceled. On the positive side, there are many great agents who always go above and beyond(like you).
