Moosestompers Weekend, Houlton ME celebrates winter.

What is Moosestompers? Sounds like something the animal abuse folks would get up in arms about right? No, Moosestompers Weekend happens every year the first weekend in February. It started up at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone.

The B-52 SAC air base is gone but the commmander of the moth balled Loring AFB Alan Bean ended up becoming our Houlton ME town manager. Bean brought the idea of "the moose is loose" with him to revive the even in Southern Aroostook County to continue the  winter.

The whole idea of Moosestompers Weekend is family fun, a chance to get out and enjoy new fresh white snow with clean air outdoor fun.

We celebrate, not dread winter. Headig outside, getting off the couch and socializing with friends and neighbors. Kids are not the only ones to hog all the outdoor amusement either. maine moose is loose

No cost, the Maine local businesses step up to fund the events of Moosestompers.

"The Moose Is Loose" is a free three day event. Horse drawn sleigh rides, games, music, bonfires, sliding, snow sled events, fireworks. We don't hibernate in Maine and are outdoors all four seasons.

Any area that you live, there are bound to be myths. Ones the locals just smile and know are so far out of whack from the way things really are. So no, it is not 50 below zero every day in Maine during the winter.

And no, we don't see snow everyday of winter in Maine.

Plus yes, snow is a good thing and pretty hard to down hill or cross country ski or ride the trails on snowmobiles without the white stuff. Snow in Maine is what fuels the winter economy. The snow flakes open up an entirely new set of recreational options. Here's the Moosestompers Weekend schedule of events that are COVID friendly and safely run.

Ever snow shoe a trail or carve one down the side of a Maine winter ski slope?

We get excited when snow is in the weather forecast and start planning the recreation options that need it. I plowed six inches of new snow yesterday that arrived just in time for this weekend's Moosestomper coming up the Febraru 5,6,7th, 2021.

When you live in Maine, you are outdoors everyday.

All four seasons, not just one or two. Just dress a little differently and apply or remove layers of clothing accordingly depending on which season we have are in. Ice fishing derbies are also part of the Moosestompers Weekend too. So are ice hockey games at the Millar Civic Center Arena at Community Park. More on Houlton Maine a border town with Canada, the county seat of Aroostook that has lots of community events year round.

In the past the Moosestompers half dollar coin scramble for different age groups was a big hit.

Because of COVID, some of the most popular traditional events have been reworked for the pandemic safety sake. Get signed up for the local fishing derby. Lots of ways to participate in this upcoming Southern Aroostook County event. The Moose Is Loose, beat feet, make tracks to Community Park in Houlton Maine for Moosestomper's Weekend.

Hello Andrew - maybe mumbling Mooers Moosestompers for more than a moment will make Winter last longer than six more weeks.  After all, it certainly seems that the residents of Houlton Maine understand the celebratory aspect of the season.

The moose is loose in Maine. What a delightful post, video, event, and winter celebration for people. I swear, if I didn't love it here so much, I'd convince Bernie to make a move to Maine.
