A Featured Image Does NOT Guarantee a Featured Post
Getting Featured on ActiveRain has been a big deal as long as I have been a member… and that’s been more than a few years. Seems to me we had around 6000 members when I joined.
I suspect most bloggers love to be featured....who wouldn't?! After all you get that beautiful gold star plus extra points, and plenty of recognition from your AR friends who comment which means even more points. And there may be some envy from your peers that YOUR post is on the Feature Board and theirs is not.
Does it change your life? No.
Does it bring you more business? Possibly, depending on the content
Does it feel good. Yep, it does!
But there is still the mystique about what posts get featured and why.
Posts that provide suggestions for getting featured have been popular for years.
Plus we certainly have seen plenty of articles on the reasons posts might not get selected for a feature, along with a little griping here and there about not being featured.
So now we have a new requirement on AR, in order to enhance the home page and improve the look of posts that are featured.
Debe Maxwell, CRS covers the topic admirably in her post about the new featured image request which you SHOULD read. OK, it’s now required that you must include a featured image in your post in order to be featured and garner those extra 100 points.
Debe shows you where to click and include that special image! Easy peasy, as she says! Really, it is!
Said another way, you write a great feature-worthy post but no feature image is included, and you lose. NO feature, NO extra points, and major disappointment because you knew that was a stellar post that the Feature Fairies would love, but they didn’t, and boo hoo because you neglected to include that featured image.
So here's the 411…including a feature image at the top of your post does NOT guarantee your post WILL be featured. That would negate the whole purpose of selecting the best posts for features, wouldn't it?
You still have to write something compelling, that will be meaningful and interesting to lots of people, and meet the criteria used to select who gets that coveted gold star and 100 extra points. And make sure you include that additional featured image that will show up at the beginning of your post.
Take advantage of the opportunity and make that photo meaningful! I suggest using one of your own photos that truly speaks to the content of your post, hints at what lies ahead, and grabs someone’s interest.
C’mon, it’s easy! You already know how to add photos to your post to make it more interesting. This is one more simple step – go to the featured image link (top left under your blog title), click “browse” to search your photos on your computer, select the one you want (be sure it’s labeled with a keyword), click “open”, and it will show up in the post you are editing. And there’s no need to format it!! It’s so simple.
If you wrote a feature worthy post and you receive that gold star…bravo! If not, so what - you have a well-written post with a fabulous image at the top to dress up your article and make it more appealing to your readers.
