Some People Ask "Points?!? Who Cares?"

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

I just posted a comment on a blog by an ActiveRainer to whom I subscribe because I care about what he says.  He is an Eco-Broker whose perspective I respect, and I learn stuff from him that I don't find elsewhere.  He asks this question - the one in the title of this blog -and then goes on to say he's starting another blog where no one cares about points. If that means he won't be contributing to Active Rain any more, I'll miss him.  He makes a difference here, as so many members do.

In a way, I sometimes feel that attacks on ActiveRain points are attacks on ActiveRain high-pointers, almost personal insults.  I can't take that lying down any more, so here's my feedback:

bowling - istockphoo

Most people don't go bowling to accumulate points.  While some do care about their scores, most just wanna have fun.  ActiveRain is kinda like that.

You may assume that participation of ActiveRain high-pointers is all about those points.  The truth is quite different - most just participate, and the points automatically come.

If critics would do a little investigating, they would find that most high-pointers have made MANY more comments than they ever received points for.  They've received many more points than one gets for "just" posting blogs - and that's because they write quality content that gets featured every now and then AND they earn lots of points from
other people commenting on those quality posts.

Many of us (maybe MOST of us) also give back to the community - by volunteering as group founders or moderators, contest judges, and the like.

People who are motivated solely by ActiveRain points, or sit around complaining about them, aren't here to learn and share or even socialize with others on ActiveRain.  Those members usually get bored fairly quickly and just stop participating.  (Or... sometimes they realize it's more fun to actually participate, and they end up as high-pointers themselves.)

What a wasted opportunity to enhance one's exposure, to learn and to share, when they do drop off of ActiveRain!  (Not to mention the fun of racking up all those points.)

Before bashing points or blaming them for all that may be "wrong" with ActiveRain, critics should ask themselves if the problem is really the point system, or their own outlook.

If you're honest with yourself, you'll realize that members who have accumulated a lot of points on ActiveRain tend to have a positive attutude, good writing skills, good content, personality, and they're not judgemental (except at this moment, I admit to being judgmental - just this once)  ... and ActiveRain points are not their main goal in life.

Kinda like bowling - you go for the fun, the comraderie, the exercise - seldom for the points.  But you get them for playing the game.  Of course, you could always play golf or tennis, or watch football, hockey or basketball...

Oh yeah, they have points, too.  'Just can't get away from 'em!

Margaret, I concur with your defense of the point system becuase it is a way for the subsribers to be more faithful and commited to the blogging process.  As we become more personally invested in giving, recieving and sharing our opinions, the points become a bonus.  Without them, I fear that our blogging would become stagnant.  There are so few places in life, where we are rewarded immediately for active participation in an event or program.  However, the reward is much more intrinsic than extrinsic.  Job well done, Margaret! Thank you for saying what many of us have been thinking.

Margaret, way too many comments to read. This subject has been going on and on forever. I liken it to "I don't want to play in your yard, anymore. Who ever this is needs to get over it and enjoy learning from others and realize that it is just great to get to know other professionals who you might do business with. Just today a previous seller who moved out of California called and asked me to recommend someone in another state that she is moving to and I found it quite simple to immediately recommend a Realtor I have come to know right here on Active Rain.

So, tell your friend that maybe he won't get points he thinks he deserves but he might just get a referral...

Margaret- A very well deserved gold star, precisely the point! You just got points for writing great content in a postive way with care and compassion.

I love points, that is what got me going in the first place, then it quickly changed to writing quality posts but I still love my points:) I have a lot of points. I do get featured. I don't understand why there are those who wish to punish me for that and complain. One time I had two posts in a row featured by different members of the god head unbeknownst to the other. Well, the complaints that ensued were ...

The point is that those who have a lot of points and are still here are the givers of this community.
Bob, Brad, Richard and Jonathan do an awesome job here and I say, don't fix what ain't broke. And I am frankly tired of certain naysayers trying to rain on our parade. If you don't like it, jump ship. You are not paying for this service in dollars. And I say, let's be thankful to the ar gods and the givers of this awesome community,  not spit on their hard work.

You are right, it does feel like some want to smash the veterans and I do take it like a personal attack which kind of hurts because I am paying it forward. What is wrong with that?

Margret...
I went over there and read that post and I have one thing to say, EGO outta control and bigger than TXhead !  It's the downfall of a lot of agents.  I would stay as far away from that one as I could.  They only have 2 associates, and the comments have been made on their blogs.  They think points are evil and don't want any because they don't have any!  They should go play somewhere else as my friend Gena said.  It's all total CRAP!

L

PS, I sure wish you would come join my group, Texas Real Estate, we've got some quality people and post there, in fact that's one of my only guidelins, no crap, good quality stuff, funny, personal, inspiring whatever, try to weave some TX in there and your good to go.  You don't have to live in TX, we have several member that don't, and now you have a daughter here.  Please consider this my personal invitation to join my group, We'll all make you feel right at home.  L

Morning Margaret,

Wow! Did you shake the bushes or did you shake the bushes!!  LOL   Lots of comments!!!

Very well stated and as always, well written. So true, your view is the rule rather then the exception here in the Rain. Highpointers for the most part are there through effort and participation. A few, however achieved their point standing by posting meaningless pages of photo's that contribute nothing to the community of Rain. That annoyed me at first because I felt that outsiders coming to Rain would view those highpointers as more qualified then those with less point standing. I have since come to realize it doesn't matter. A truly interested party will read and evaluate one on their totality.

The important consideration for Rain menbers is the learning and sharing experience.

In reality it's the points that MADE Active Rain popular. Had it not been for the excitment of accumulating points, AR would just be another social network languishing on the internet.

Margaret.... I agree with Adam Waldman's comment and Kristal Kraft's comment.  I am so getting tired of the point chit chat and the feature chit chat.  I am starting to sound negative and would love to tell everyone... go some where else. Go start your own platform.  Most that complain, don't share a solution, they just complain. Gee, that's too easy to do.  Do I like a few that are passing me by, because all they do is post 10 to 15 posts a week, and only 1% of them are truly quality?  No...  it angers me, because I think I earned mine with a higher standard.  But overall, points don't make me money, just on top, popular, and noticed...  but as Kristal stated, if it wasn't for the points, I don't think we would have that many participants.  Great job with this...

Is it Margaret Rome who said I should get points for such good comments?  Very funny - but SO true!  And not because they tend to agree with me, but because they are deeply thoughtful.

I am new to Active Rain and still don't know much about the point system. It just seems to me that the network family of rain is too rich to spoil it by looking at points. I know that I am here to develop relationships and hopefully learn much in the process. If I can share what I learn with others or give information then all the better. Life is to short to count points. Friends and associates yes.

Marg - We all tend to see things from our own perspective, does it chaff when a person posts drivel day after day, of course it does, but not because they are accumulating a mass of points, because they are affecting the quality of active|rain in the eyes of the public (and the search engines) for all of us

Margaret - thanks for a great post. I am more interested in the relationships I develop here, the referrals, and most importantly the "knowledge". If I do not know how to do something, I simply look at one of my bookmarked posts . . . what an awesome group!!!

I have been learning a lot from others on this site, not only about blogging, but what a great job poeple are doing around the country to market their listings, and help their buyers buy a home. Finally, I have also learned about what a great breed of people Realtors and those business poeple that help with the whole real estate transaction are.

Go getters, marketers, self starters, business people, and finally Caring...Congrats!!!!

I guess I hope there is room for everyone....Points or no points...some people play golf for fun...some sign up for tournaments, get a handicap and keep score - without mulligans!  Next someone will complain that some Realtors are in it just for the money or maybe we should complain if they are in it and don't make any money....

It is great to have a forum where people can share...and make up their own mind on whether they want to count or not to count....

Thanks for the opening up the discussion...Mike
