From its classic style aesthetic to its cosy hygge rituals, Scandinavian style has been all the rage lately. You can barely scroll through Instagram without seeing someone trying to replicate it. Even Scandinavian kids clothing has caught the eye of the world with its minimalist, chic looks.

If you want to look authentically Scandinavian, start with the basics, which you’ll find in this guide.

What is Scandinavian style?

Scandi style could be defined as uncomplicated, sophisticated and easy to wear. It’s usually sustainable fashion, promising long-lasting clothes that will last for seasons.

The secret behind Scandinavian style is to keep it simple. Less is more. Whether you’re going for a simple look with basic colors or a more daring look, the trick is to make it look effortless.

Some of the most popular Scandinavian brands that have taken the world by storm are Ganni, Stine Goya, Malene Birger and Samsøe Samsøe. If you’re looking for simple but stylish everyday wear, you’ll love H&M, which has all the basics and then some.

The Basic tee

Scandinavians are masters of simplicity, which is particularly evident in their clothing. A basic tee can transform an outfit and make it look effortless – which is the look you’re going for when channeling your inner Scandi style.

Monochrome colors are always a safe bet. So, go for white, black, grey or pastels. When you pair it with a statement piece, like ripped denims or a pair of fierce earrings, you’re on the right track.

The layer

Scandinavia has a changeable climate, which can make dressing a challenge. For that reason, locals have mastered the use of layering.

You can team your outfit as you like, but typical layering looks could be a sweater over a maxi dress or a roll neck under a blazer. Extra points if you keep the colors in the same tone (a tone-in-tone look is quite popular).

The Sweater

Have you watched ”The Killing”? In the original Danish TV-series, the main heroine, Sarah Lund, always wears a thick patterned jumper. Aside from the sweater being totally hygge, it’s also warm, comfortable and authentically Scandinavian.

While any sweater will do, a chunky, oversized style is a must for a true Scandi look.

Statement accessory

A bag, scarf, earrings or jewelry – whatever works for you. Add a statement piece to your outfit, but only one. As a rule of thumb, try not to go overboard and remember, less is more.

Denim

Is there anything as simple, timeless and basic as a pair of jeans? Whether you go for a denim-on-denim look or just opt for a denim jacket or a pair of mom jeans, denim is a Scandinavian wardrobe staple.

Have some fun with it and mix and match the colors. Try a pair of black jeans with a light blue distressed denim jacket. You’ll get the Scandi chic look in no time.

Boots

To complete your look, add a pair of boots – and ensure that you can dress them up and down. Most Scandi boots are highly functional, high quality and usually waterproof or resistant.

Some years back, rain boots were all the rage in Denmark (especially the ones from Hunters). These days, chunky soles and hiking-inspired boot details are in.
