John Charles Carter was born in Wilmette, Illinois back in 1923 to Russell and Lila. In 1930, the family moved to Richfield, Michigan. When he was ten his parents divorced, he graduated from New Trier High School. In his autobiography he recounted the tie he lived in Michigan it was a rural heavily forested part of the state. He really enjoyed that time hunting and fishing.
Also, while in Michigan he often wandered in the forest, “acting out characters from books he had read”. While in high school he enrolled in the drama program, playing the lead role in the amateur silent 16 mm film adaptation of Peer Gynt. He also performed in the Winnetka Community Theatre, he earned a drama scholarship to Northwestern University. He attended until he joined the military enlisting in the United States Army Air Forces serving for two years as a radio operator and aerial gunner aboard a B-25 Mitchell medium bomber. He held the highest classified military and Department of Energy security clearance of Q clearance.
After being discharged his fame rose as he started performing on Broadway and then Hollywood. He died in2008, he was 84.
