John King

John King was born in Ballinrobe, Ireland back in 1865.  He was involved in an incident and was wanted by the local police, he made his way to the United States arriving in Vermont around 1893, he enlisted in the Navy serving on board the USS Massachusetts during the Spanish-American War.  In 1900, he was transferred to the USS Vicksburg during the Philippine-American War.

In 1916, he was discharged from the Navy.  However, at the beginning of World War I he reenlisted as a Chief serving in New York until 1919.  After his retirement, I couldn’t find anything about him until his death in 1938, he is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

What you may not know about Chief John King is that he is only one of nineteen to receive the Medal of Honor twice.

I bet he would have loved to have worked on his namesake Destroyer the USS John King and gotten away from that steam and those boilers. Tough work and a tough man to be awarded two Medals of Honor. Thank You Chief King!

When I first started reading I was thinking that it was going to be a story about a crook from another country becoming a politician in the USA and becoming quite wealthy, haha.

WOW, truly a man of valor James Dray . When I read about the men in the ND Medal of Honor Memorial (a block from my home) they all have amazing stories. I will have to look up John King and see his acts of heroism.

The requirements for the Medal of Honor were standardized among all the services, requiring that a recipient had distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.
