Throwback Thursday: Sabrage for the Sunset in Kauai
Sabrage is a ceremony where a bottle of champagne is opened with a sabre, harking back to Napoleonic times in France (well, that's what Google says!). There is even a special sword - a Champagne Sword - often used for sabrage.
The St. Regis Hotel in Princeville, Kauai, celebrates the sunset every night with this ceremony which we enjoyed a number of times (most recently in 2017). The sunset, and views from the St. Regis, never disappointed!

I have heard of that being done but never seen it in person. That must have been quite an experience and the sky is definitely amazing in that photo!
Good morning, Jeff... having lived in France, how did I not know about this? As for the ceremony in Princeville, while I've been there several times, it was to visit one of my friends who lived there... so I guess we just never hit up the hotel at that hour.

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS - I have been to the St. Regis but not enjoyed their sunset ceremony. This is such a special island. Though I have not seen anyone in person open a bottle of champagne that way, I bet it would be something to see.

In the Napa winery of Schramsberg (bubbly wine), a visit to the caves used to include a sabering demo...We all had to stand far. At an event we marketed for our client,they are going to used the saber. Apparently Napoleon used to open bottles of Champagne that way.
Thanks Bob Crane I suspect there are similar ceremonies elsewhere.
It was great fun and I am ready to go back James Dray but going to Hawaii is not for everyone...and there are certainly plenty of other places to see that are wonderful, too.

Thanks Brian England I had never heard of this before our visit but it was certainly fun to watch. The sunset was gorgeous but hard to capture with my phone. Looking forward to going again...some day. Sigh!

Okay Jeff Dowler, CRS buy 100 bottles of champagne that are chilled. Buy a sword to open them with. Then one at a time open the bottle. If it doesn't work, drink the champagne to drown your misery. If it does work, drink the champagne in a celebratory toast. After 100 bottles, Then decide if you should do this some more. Mind you, you will need volunteers to help you. I suggest renting a 20 room mansion and a few of us will join you and help you dispose of the champagne.
It was cool Sheri Sperry - MCNE® We just happened to be there the first time some years ago and learned that they did this nightly. And I agree about Kauai being very special - I am ready for a return visit, and soon.
