If The House Has A Story Tell It

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400 311291

If the house has a story, tell it.  It’s more than sticks and bricks; it’s home.

Going on a listing presentation. I go to see if I want the listing, not whether I can get it.  Taking on unique and unusual properties is my passion.

The house starts talking to me, and I talk back, asking many questions.

Many times I have heard from the owners,

“We talked to other agents, but they gave us CMAs and market reports and talked about our house as though it were only sticks and bricks. You connected with us and with our home. Your questions were about how we lived and loved and what was special about the place."

sticks and bricks

You talked to other family members about memories, history, special occasions, happy times, and not so happy times. You wanted to know about our home so you could tell a story to get buyers ready for living in this home.

And I even suggested a family member writing a letter to their home, like this one or even this one, or this one.

If the house has a story, please tell it.

Thinking about selling your unique home

Hi Margaret,  Thank you for sharing this great perspective.  I try to get the story from the owners/house as well.  That little extra shows how much you care about them and not just the listing.

You're right about homes having history, Margaret.  I especially enjoy visiting those houses that have been existence for awhile.  Oh, the tales some of them tell!

Grant Schneider, Owners who are really attached to their homes, appreciate this approach. Please don't do this with someone whose house is only sticks and bricks to them.

Wayne Martin Learned this at the very beginning of my career. There are times to walk away from a listing and, hopefully, we all know that feeling.

I agree. Telling stories about houses moves them from the realm of an object (3 bedroom, 2 bath, ranch - blah) to that of a warm home ready to provide years of memories to new owners.

Hello Margaret - I remember a listing appointment many years ago.  It was an "upcall" back in days where that was a good source of business yet "way past" its effectiveness for most agents who dismissed it as a bit of a time-waster.

I went to the property.  It was quite nice.  After a while, the wife told me that I was first agent(I eventually heard they called three) who was listening to them, asked for a tour of their property and took notes.

I was fairly new-to-real estate at the time but not new-to-life.  I was thankful for the observation.  I am not sure they immediately told me but the listing was signed and the house sold during a market that was good but not overly active or quick-moving.

It sold for less than my suggested list price.  Sitting at their dining room table finishing up the paperwork as they were signing the sales contract they told me:  this sales price was much higher than either of the two other agents recommendation.  Your enthusiasm for our home told us that you were the best choice for us.

Real estate(and real life) is all about the connections we make.  Sorry to make such a long comment but your post made me recall that moment.

Margaret if a family has lived in a home for many years there will be strong feelings about the home and stories to tell.  They maybe selling the home, but the memories and the stories live forever.
