I Lost Another Client

I Lost Another Client

I received an email last night that I lost a client.

It’s not what you may be thinking…that a buyer or seller I was working with made another decision and moved on to a different agent. That happens to us all occasionally.

This was about death!

We become close to many of our buyers and sellers…some more than others. And death is inevitable for us all.

Sometimes it’s expected due to a serious illness, but at other times it’s a complete shock, as it is to the person who suddenly loses their spouse, a partner, a child, a close friend, a dear pet..

I’m very saddened by the news, but so moved that I was informed.

These clients were so wonderful to work with, and we became friends. I helped them buy a home a few years ago, and then to sell it in order to relocate across the country to be near family 2 years ago.

I just sent a Valentine’s email on Saturday, and got a wonderful note back from them.

I responded to the email right away, and will reach out in person in a day or two. Life goes on, but it doesn’t always deliver good news does it?!

There have been others, of course, over the years, as we no doubt all have experienced, and each one is sorrowful. It never gets easy, does it?

It's part of what makes our role in this business so special...getting involved in people's lives, often deeply, and in ways we might not anticipate.

Most of the time it's joyful, but not always...that's the human part of the real estate business, isn't it?

Hi Carol Williams Getting to know who we are working with on a personal level is one of the things I enjoy most. There is, of course, the joy as well as the sadness that come with that closeness!

Thank you M.C. Dwyer  I would have to go back and count but I can immediately think of 7 clients that have passed. The number, of course, is not important - each one brings sorrow given the relationships we develop. And there are those who suffer other hardships - illness for example - who also mean so much!

Hi Jeff, I am so sorry for your loss. We do become very close with some of our clients. I had a client's wife past away right before Christmas. She was only 57. She was beautiful inside and out. It happened so sudden. She did not suffer long though. I was heartbroken. I would have stopped by to visit them over the Christmas holiday that I do every year. The family is still very devasated and so am I.

Jeff,   It is tough, that is for sure.  I lost 4 of my customers last year.  One had become a great friend.  Another was the mother of a high school friend.  We sold the home so she and her husband could spend the golden years closer to my friend.  The mom passed just a month after moving.  Cherish each day, since none are promised!

Congratulations on the feature - not that this post was about points.

I have lost several clients this year too - and it is always moving when the family lets you know because  you have become a part of the fabric of their life. I understand how you feel

I know this is off the subject, but I love the photo of the flower fields. I lived in Carlsbad, Encinitas area back in 1970, until I moved to Maui in 1973. I use to love driving by the flower fields off the 405 hwy, so beautiful.

Death is inevitable for all of us but when unexpected, it's shocking. I also lost a client a few months ago I had worked with for two transactions--sudden, shocking, a wonderful wife left behind.  Another reminder to appreciate every day

Jeff,  Thank you for your moving post.  About that very real side of real estate, client friendships that just happen that we appreciate and feel connected to.  Real estate is real life and some client relationships end unexpectedly. Through the sadness we find the gratitude for joy of friendship.

Jeff, I am so sorry to hear of your loss; and as stated prior by many others, this is one of those inevitable experiences we are all too familiar.  Thank you for sharing this.  It brings back many memories of clients gone-by and it has prompted me to reach out again to "stay connected".

Jeff, it's telling that your client's reached out to you is special. Clients become family over time. I had a client ask me to be a pallbearer at his mother's funeral. I was honored, but sad.
