YouTube Thursdays - Weather and Whatnots to Consider 2/18/2021
Obviously, weather is beyond our control. Therefore, when shooting evergreen videos we are somewhat dependent upon it if the subject matter is outside of the current weather situation. For example, this week, record snowfall prohibited our planned shoot for the generic on-camera video we intend to use for our neighborhood videos. A background of snow in our on-camera appearances wouldn't work for a neighborhood video we plan to shoot in other seasons.
Which leads us to this point, to ensure the on-camera scenes mesh well with video shot throughout the year, choose a location that is seasonally neutral. An indoor shoot makes it easier, but if like us, your niche speaks to the outdoors, it may take a bit more thought. For example, we often use the background of evergreen trees on the east side of our property. It doesn't hint of any particular time of the year. Plus, it's a good match for our NatureAsNeighbors branding.
However, the other element that can give away the season, is what you're wearing. We'll be working keeping our clothing neutral too. No shorts and flip flops, and no heavy coats. A light to medium weight pull-over sweater is a good compromise, and something residents wear year-round in the Pacific Northwest depending upon the day, or the time of day.
An important thought this week!
Here's another thought that we can't stress enough. Be YOURSELF. If you're a fun-loving jokester, figure out how to interject that into your shoot. If you're more serious, that's okay. Faking humor is about as appealing as muddy shoes on a light carpet. Genuine goes a long way in building trust, and building trust is paramount to building good relationships, on and off the camera.
The bottom line, careful thought and prep time is nearly as important as what you do on the day the of the shoot. Being prepared and confident helps foster a relaxed on-camera persona.
