YouTube Thursdays - Weather and Whatnots to Consider for On-camera

YouTube Thursdays - Weather and Whatnots to Consider 2/18/2021

Obviously, weather is beyond our control.  Therefore, when shooting evergreen videos we are somewhat dependent upon it if the subject matter is outside of the current weather situation. For example, this week, record snowfall prohibited our planned shoot for the generic on-camera video we intend to use for our neighborhood videos. A background of snow in our on-camera appearances wouldn't work for a neighborhood video we plan to shoot in other seasons.

Which leads us to this point, to ensure the on-camera scenes mesh well with video shot throughout the year, choose a location that is seasonally neutral. An indoor shoot makes it easier, but if like us, your niche speaks to the outdoors, it may take a bit more thought. For example, we often use the background of evergreen trees on the east side of our property.  It doesn't hint of any particular time of the year. Plus, it's a good match for our NatureAsNeighbors branding.

However, the other element that can give away the season, is what you're wearing. We'll be working keeping our clothing neutral too. No shorts and flip flops, and no heavy coats. A light to medium weight pull-over sweater is a good compromise, and something residents wear year-round in the Pacific Northwest depending upon the day, or the time of day.

An important thought this week!

Here's another thought that we can't stress enough. Be YOURSELF.  If you're a fun-loving jokester, figure out how to interject that into your shoot. If you're more serious, that's okay. Faking humor is about as appealing as muddy shoes on a light carpet. Genuine goes a long way in building trust, and building trust is paramount to building good relationships, on and off the camera.

The bottom line, careful thought and prep time is nearly as important as what you do on the day the of the shoot.  Being prepared and confident helps foster a relaxed on-camera persona.

I think it would be exhausting to be some version of ourselves someone else thinks we should be...

Carol Williams I remember dad always saying "Just be yourself, honey." His advice whenever I felt anxious about something.

Your Dad was a wise man because you are awesome being YOU. I am sure my Dad would have done the same. Unfortunately, he died when I was 12 and my guardian Aunt & Uncle seemed to want to turn me into another version of their biological daughter.  She was great but I wasn't her.  Anyway, life is good and I'm content with who I am... most of the time.  I still have work to do to be a better person.  😀

What to wear when you are the subject of the video ... make it in the season you want with the right backdrop. But also better not be blue or green and matches the Chroma key screen color used in the background. Make sure the lightning is even across your green screen for one even shade . That'll help the "look" of you and your presentation Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD ! Great post on how to look polished and professional using real estate video.

I agree with about dressing for the season and weather, unless of course, you're trying to do an evergreen insert that will be used in multiple videos throughout the year. As usual, useful additions to the post - I sure appreciate you. D

I never considered my clothing as a seasonal give-away. Luckily in San Diego, Hawaiian Shirts and Polo-shirts get it done 10 months out of the year 😎.
