I've been hearing a great deal about how Zillow has purchased ShowingTime, and apparently that is one of the indicators of the apocalypse and the end of the world as we know it.

I wasn't aware that Zillow was one of the four horsemen portending doom. Of course Realtors have been walking around with that sandwich board (you know the one... "The End of the World is here!")... once when Zillow first emerged on the scene back in... oh, the Jurrasic period (can you believe it's all the way back in 2004 already?).. the world was rending their clothes and wringing their hands and foretelling the end of the real estate agent as we know it.

Then Zillow had the nerve, the downright unmitigated gall to purchase dotloop.   Again, the collective cry went out... "Abandon dotloop!  It's owned by the devil!... don't give them your information!!"

And now, Zillow has, once again, offended the rank and file and purchased Showing Time. And the cries go up again... "the world is ending!  Zillow is going to take over your data, your clients!"

My guess is, and it's only a guess, mind you... that very little will change. Zillow will continue to reap record profits.  Agents will continue to help their clients buy and sell real estate. And agents will continue to complain about Zillow.

The world continues to spin. Everyone return to your home offices... there's nothing to see here. Keep your head down, take a few cleansing breaths and move forward.  Nothing to see here, folks.  Nothing to see here.

Z will be here long after I've exited this business, and my exit won't be because of anything Z has ever done or not done.  I don't have to pay them $$, and whether other agents do or don't also doesn't concern me.  My success is up to the guy in the mirror.

Hello Alan - it's been awhile since I thought of those sandwich-board-wearing guys with their messages of doom and gloom.  Ah, those were such simple times. 

But they are a reminder that certain forms of craziness is a part of life.  And ones version of craziness is a thought of as a prediction of the second coming by another.

Hi Alan,

The last time I saw a person wearing a sandwhich board... well, they were advertising for the local deli, so they were actually selling sandwhiches!  We as people will always adapt.  Zillow will keep getting bigger and others will find ways to make things work.  They have before and they will again.  Just sayin...

Zillow has raised our collective hackles multiple times, and it will happen again. And the real estate world, while having lots to talk about each, didn't fall apart then and won't now. Your analogy is right on target!

I do think it's important to know what's going on in our real estate environment, adjust whatever might be required to adjust, and carry on. In this case, I don't have to personally adjust anything since I don't use showing time anyway. But other things will come along that do impact me in some way and I just have to decide how to address them.
