If you are always waiting for the right time to make the move, the right time may just pass you by.
I met with a client the other day discussing his potential home sale and purchase of forever home, again. We have done so a few times in the past, always weighing pros and cons, discussing possibilities, trying to rationalize the many buts.
Just to be clear, I don't mind the meet-ups and discussions and evaluations of the market to figure out if now is the right time. I enjoy them actually, very much so. Be it once, or twice, or many times, there's never any pressure to make the move. I wholeheartedly believe that a number of things have to come together for it to be right. Believe it or not, the market conditions are secondary. The number one priority are your financial affairs: job security, retirement savings, emergency fund. Only when your finances are in order, should you begin to consider if the market is right for you.
There is, however, such a thing as moving paralysis. If you are always waiting for the right time to make a move, understand that the right time may never come.
My client does not like his current home, the one he's been living in for 15 or so years. He doesn't enjoy coming home at the end of the day. As a matter of fact, he doesn't even think of the house he has been occupying and paying the mortgage on as his home. And that is something that should tug on your heartstrings. It does on mine.
At the very core of our profession lies the belief that everyone deserves a home; not just a place to hang your hat, but a place to rest your head. You deserve a home, a sanctuary, a safe haven, a place where you get to paint with the colors of your soul. Home is where you get to be you, express yourself, nurture, entertain, relax, enjoy, unwind, and recharge.
Your home should make you want to be there, not longing to leave. It shouldn't feel like temporary accommodations or like somebody else lives there. Your home is your unique space, it should welcome you warmly every day and elicit a sweet sigh of belonging when you open your front door!
So when you are waiting for the right time to make a move, listen to your heart. What does your heart say? Are you home? If not, start dreaming what home looks like for you. What is essential? What do you need? What would you like? And then call me to talk possibilities, to assess your financial readiness, to consider the market conditions and to get ready to fall in love (with your new home).
If you heart is longing to be home, then don't wait for this milestone or that event to take place first because there will always be others. If you are always waiting for just the right time to make that move, it may just pass you by. You only have this one life, you deserve to find home, to feel at home, to be home.
