There are a few drawbacks to not buying new but nothing that cannot be overcome.  When we bought our current home it was not my choice but my wife did not want to wait to have  a new home built. We gained at the least over $100,000 in outside plantings and vegetation some of which were worth thousands (Dwarf Japanese maples x3).

The kitchen and baths were redone and the entire home was bought for less than we could have built after our inside work

Hello Ritu - there is something quite special about new construction.  That smell of fresh lumber and that never-lived-in-before feel are but two of the reasons.  On the other hand, established neighborhoods, buying into an already-known community and understanding how a property has aged(like a fine wine) has its advantages as well.  It's a personal decision that takes some personal time to review.  And analyze.  It's a part of the process;
