Wordless Wednesday...They’ll Be Back...Maybe

Houston may not have the tropical weather that South Florida has but with the few hard freezes we may experience, our plants usually will survive. We’ve learned to cover them (which is why we never throw away old sheets) or bring them inside our homes.

However, the snow and freezing weather we had beginning on February 14, may mean we’ll be playing a wait and see or wait and replant game.

This Sago Palm was so beautiful covered in snow...now not so much.

From my reading, it may come back so we’ll wait a bit, cut off some of the yellow leaves and see what happens.

Hello Kathy, I am sure they will come back with any kind of luck.  I like what Raymond Henson does with his christmas lights.

Kathy plants can be surprisingly very hardy.  It will be interesting to see what Spring brings.

Hi Kathy Streib, I hope your sago palm comes back to life. As you know, we don't have harsh weather in FL but I have lost a few plants due to freeze one year.

Hi Sham Reddy CRS I was looking for signs of spring when we were out on our walk.

Roy Kelley I really am. It could have been much worse.

Brian England we are noticing all of the damage from the extremely cold weather that we had. Lots of brown and yellow plants.

I'm hoping my beautiful Hibiscus plant come back.  It's looking a little the worse for winter wear.

Wayne Martin perfectly said!!!!  My family makes it worthwhile.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel Thank you for sending warm California wishes...we are having beautiful weather!!!  The middle part of the Sago Palm is not squishy so they may be fine.

Michael Jacobs well said. We had luck with us when our pipes did not freeze or break. That's all I wanted.

Thanks Nina Hollander We had them in Florida and love having them here.

Barbara Todaro we're going to wait a bit then will probably give it some food. We don't want to trim anything until we know for sure that the cold weather is done.

Sharon Lee it looks a lot better than some of the taller palms in the area.

Kat Palmiotti I will!!!!  I'm keeping an eye on the other Sagos I've seen in the neighborhood.

Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI what a great idea!!!!! I remember in Florida, the citrus growers would water them before the freeze and that would help them.

Rocky Dickerson when I heard we'd get snow, I remember the light snow we got when I was a kid...blink and it's gone. This was totally different.

Me too Will Hamm It's great as long as you have power!!!

I agree George Souto I saw a few buds on some trees on our walk but I'm not sure if they were new or from before the freeze.

Beth Atalay I do remember some rare hard freezes and I also remember that the Orlando area could often be 15 degrees colder than Delray. That always surprised me.

Myrl Jeffcoat I love Hibiscus...hope it comes back.

Hi Kathy Streib - I know you have the experience to work with them.  Coming from New York, the first time I saw a brown branch on our palm trees I freaked out.  Now I know it is natural.

The only thing I plant are bulbs like tulips and hyacinths that come back every year.  Our shrubs are evergreen.  I don't have a green thumb, but do admire it in others.  Hope your palm recovers.
