Lihue, Hawaii Community Spotlight

Lihue is the capital city of Kauai Island, and despite it being heavily urbanized compared to other towns on the island, it still retains its charming tropical paradise feel. There are beautiful natural wonders, tourist-friendly areas, and landmark attractions that make the region quite attractive to locals and visitors alike.

Like many other communities, Lihue was originally established as a sugarcane plantation by German colonists in 1849. The plantation industry declined through the years, and most mills and farms were abandoned and replaced by tourism which became the primary industry in Hawaii.
