The Great Crawl Space Debate

By
Home Inspector with Pillar To Post Professional Home Inspections

Crawl spaces seem to draw lots of different opinions on whether to be vented or sealed.  Do they let moisture in or keep it dried out when vented?  How about insulation?  It seems like this gets even more intense depending on what part of the country you are in.

A web site that contains a lot of good information is:

www.crawlspaces.org

Are there other sites out there that you have found to have good and reliable information?

I am just not sure about mechanical venting for a couple of reasons: 1) how many attics have you been in where the attic fans have been turned off or wiring disconnected? 2) if the equipment breaks down, will the homeowner notice to have it repaired, and if he does not, what will happen to the moisture in the space;and 3) just for energy efficiency sake, a vented crawl space makes more sense. I do not have any other source for you. I have seen this site before, and it is good, but I think some thought is needed about different issues with this area of the home, before sealing it.
