Placida, FL: Charlotte County Commissioners Voting on Height Restrictions Today...

Today, the Charlotte County Commssion will meet to vote on several items on their agenda.  One of the most watched votes will be on the height restrictions currently allowed for buildings, especially buildings on our coastlines.   In Placida where I live, developers are trying to get permission to build a hotel, condo complex up to 60 FT (currently the max height is 38 FT). 

There is no doubt that hotels/resorts (like Hyatt, Marriott, Ritz) are needed in this area...   When people come to look at real estate in Boca Grande, Placida, Englewood and Manasota Key where $1M listings are not-uncommon, we have to suggest they book rooms in Sarasota or Naples for the resort style hotels (Ritz or Coconut Point Hyatt) that these potential buyers are used to.  This is a shame...

Our area is losing future potential property owners, future potential vacation visitors and future residents because we have no quality hotels or resorts to visit while checking out the area...  And sending them over to Sarasota and Bonita Springs and Estero does NOT help us as real estate agents here on the Cape Haze Peninsula trying to encourage businesses to move here and families to raise their families here when there are no businesses able to survive here.  Why move here (or visit here) if we have to drive 30-45 minutes and waste gas to get to work or our hotel or our relatives house???

I love driving in my town and seeing open water and the Gulf of Mexico peeking through the bushes...  I do not want wall to wall condo towers on the coast lines...  but I do not want the county to shut the door on our chances to have at least one UPSCALE RESORT STYLE HOTEL in this area to draw employment, year-round restaurants, entertainment and vacationers to the area.  If this resort is done right, it can use the beauty of the area, the nature of the area wisely to create an eco-friendly resort with attracting eco-tourism, good uses of green-space, use of golf-carts instead of gas guzzling cars, have the resort blend into our coastline, not stick out like a sore thumb, etc.

I hope they consider all the options and encourage good uses of the coastline...
