Throwback Thursday...Thoughts of Bluebonnets

Just a year ago we were beginning to understand Covid-19 and its impact on all of us. Texas was just beginning to place restrictions on bars and dining in restaurants. We were encouraged to stay at home.

We had hoped to take a car trip not far from us to view our beautiful Texas Bluebonnets but I would have to settle for the few that I saw out at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve...which remained open.

When I was a little girl it was kind of a tradition to have your photo taken in a field of bluebonnets. I still see many families with young children and grown-ups doing the same thing. (although from what I read recently, that is discouraged so as not to harm the Bluebonnets)

From what I understand, though, this year should be a good year for the Bluebonnets, so I see a car trip towards Brenham and College Station in my future.

Good Morning Kathy,

Every State has its special flower. The Texas Bluebonnet is one of them. In Massachusetts, ours is the Mayflower

Doug- I am not familiar with the Mayflower but they're beautiful. They look so dainty.

To think a year ago, the spring break crowd in Branson was told to go home. Branson reopened in May 2020 and people came to enjoy the lakes, hiking, biking and 17 golf courses in the area. Today,  the spring break families are back and bigger than ever !

Hi Faye- Texas opened earlier than some states but unfortunately when it did open the Bluebonnet season had passed.

The photo of you and Grandma is precious, Kathy. One of these days, I hope to see a sea of bluebonnets blooming in a field. Here, we have lupine and the Camas Lily, they also look like blue water from a distance. As a fan of wildflowers, I love them all.

Thank you Debb- I love wildflowers too. A month or so ago, they did a spring mow at Kickerillo. This is supposed to help with the wild flowers!!  And that is my favorite photo of my grandmother and me.

Kathy,

We go see the lupines and the California poppies.  There are fields everywhere in the countryside.  I am hoping to see your bluebonnets one of these days soon.  A

Hi Ron and Alexandra- I was worried that the freeze we had would have a negative impact on the bluebonnets but from what I've read they should be fine.

So my girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Houston to see my mom at the end of March to start of April. I forget...we are heading up to Waco for a day, will that be a good time to see them?

Jeffrey- here's a link for you

I think your timing should be fine. If you have time for a quick cup of coffee, let me know but I know how it is when visiting family!!!

Anywhere around Brenham should be pretty good.

We are heading up towards Waco so I think location-wise it should be good, but I was worried about that cold snap killing the flowers.

Thanks for the smile and sharing the beautiful, cherished photo today.

Hi Wanda- I feel lucky in that Texas was never as totally closed off as other areas. And we made many trips to the driveways of our friends and relatives delivering baked goods. Not as good as getting together over coffee or a meal but at least we saw each other.

I am determined this year- so bluebonnets here I come.

I don't believe I've seen a field of Blue Bonnets before.  Probably the closest I've come to it, was seeing a field of Lupines in the high country of Yosemite.

Dear Kathy,

So beautiful! I found seeds for sale. Maybe we have to see, if blue bonnets will grow around here too. They are nitrogen fixing plants, so great to grow early in the season.
