Ellen Church was born in Cresco, Iowa back in 1904. She graduated from Cresco High School. After graduation she addended the University of Minnesota graduating with a degree in nursing. After graduation, she worked at a San Francisco hospital. Not only was she a registered nurse, she also was a licensed pilot.
She was hired by Boeing Air Transport in 1930. She was expected to attend to the passengers, help with hauling luggage, fueling and assisting pilots to push the aircraft into hangars. At the time her salary was very good at $125.00 a month. She was involved in an automobile accident that ended her career just 18 months into it. During WWII she served in the Army Nurse Corps as a captain and flight nurse. A horse-riding accident ended her life in 1965, she was 60.
