Ellen Church was born in Cresco, Iowa back in 1904.  She graduated from Cresco High School.  After graduation she addended the University of Minnesota graduating with a degree in nursing.  After graduation, she worked at a San Francisco hospital.  Not only was she a registered nurse, she also was a licensed pilot.

She was hired by Boeing Air Transport in 1930.  She was expected to attend to the passengers, help with hauling luggage, fueling and assisting pilots to push the aircraft into hangars.  At the time her salary was very good at $125.00 a month.  She was involved in an automobile accident that ended her career just 18 months into it.  During WWII she served in the Army Nurse Corps as a captain and flight nurse.  A horse-riding accident ended her life in 1965, she was 60.

What you may not know about Ellen is that she was the first documented flight attendant.

I wonder if Ellen still holds some kind of a record for being the only flight attendant who was a qualified pilot?

Good morning James. Ellen was a pioneer. You would not get that degree of cooperation from today's unionized flight attendants. Enjoy your day.

Ellen sounds like she was a very hard worker... and accident prone.  I really appreciate Barbara's photo as it truly captures the time of Ellen's era.

Good morning, James... enjoyed reading about Ellen, as I always do reading about the women you feature. Also loved learning a bit of history about the airline industry at the same time.

The role of the steward and stewardess has changed!

Now they're doing mask patrol and  stopping arguments, instead of assisting in flight safety and passenger comforts.

It is interesting that she was a pilot but ended up a flight attendant. Sign of the times I guess.

Hi James,

Barbara Todaro answered the one question I had.  It looks like it was United that made that distinction to call her a Flight Attendant, AKA back then...stewardess!

Heinrich Kubis was the world's first flight attendant, in 1912. Kubis first attended the passengers on board the DELAG Zeppelin LZ 10 Schwaben. He also attended to the famous LZ 129 Hindenburg and was on board when it burst into flames. He survived by jumping out a window when it neared the ground

INDIANA JONES predated both Kubis and Church as most talented blimp waiter, attendant, bouncer.  He threw any one OFF the blimp without a ticket. "NO TICKET NO RIDE" !
