Marketing Exposure?

Recently, a caller left a voicemail about "exposure" and having read one of my blogs.  That's two points on my scale of returning a call.  The caller didn't ring through because my phone is set up to not answer if the caller is not in my database.  Second, the "exposure" phrase has many meanings to a realtor, but to me it has another meaning.  For this reason, I called the person back.

Not a lot of people in sales have their phones set up the way my phone does not to ring through if the caller isn't in my database. In fact, some might think I'm nuts for doing that.

Over the years, I've learned that if someone is legitimately trying to reach me, they will leave a voicemail.  A voicemail allows me to research who is calling before returning the call.  I'm not one to leave a caller dangling for a day to return a phone call.   I just need five minutes to ascertain if that person is legitimate or just trying to sell me something.

Researching this phone produced zero results.  Not even a social media account. This puts me immediately on alert that either the person is trying to sell me a product or just glean information anonymously.  However, reading the message, this person said, "I have a question about the article I saw online about the exposure of the house."

The word exposure from one of my blogs may have meant marketing, a potential listing, but it could also have been about passive solar design, ie north/south orientation.  But without much to go on, who knows?

After calling her back,  she didn't say she was looking for a realtor to sell her house, which might have been her mission but she certainly didn't share it.  She also did not perk up when I mentioned directional marketing for a home.  So lastly I told her that if she needed help to let me know.  This was one of the strangest calls ever received!

A small part of my brain thinks she is with an I-buyer company learning ways to market a home online.  As an instructor I sort of took that bend with our discussion.  But really, are we educating the public or new companies selling to the public?

Hello Jan - I know agents who say(and in fact, in many cases loudly promote) that they always answer their phone.  24/7 and always-ready-to-serve:  things like that.  That's great for them but I long ago learned that every contact is not a connection.  Business or personal.  Leave a voicemail or not.  Each person finds the method that works best for them.

I need to learn to make my phone do like your phone does since I prefer not to answer calls that aren't in my database either, haha.  I definitely agree that if the call is even somewhat important, they will leave a voicemail message.

Hi Jan people that want or need to get ahold of me will leave a voicemail.  Spammers will not - well not always! As for strange phone calls....they kind of come and go.  Lately they've gone fishing elsewhere LOL.   Great seeing you last night....and glad you came early!

So true Michael Jacobs .  Not everyone wants to buy a house, sell a house, or make a business connections.  One of my other recent callers is a solar company from Tucson.  That has turned into people calling me from Tucson about solar panels.  Maybe one day that will pay off, but for now it's a lot  answers to their questions!

That must have been frustrating Grant Schneider !  I can appreciate that too as I've had solar salesmen take my class, which is why I try to see who is in the class before i start!

True Brian England !  This is apple software, probably anti-spam.  The phone doesn't even ring and flashes "potential spam" and I can see it in missed calls.  None of them leave voicemails.

True Kat Palmiotti !  You never know, especially if someone leaves a voice mail.

Thank you for hosting Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, CRB, Phoenix Broker !  You're the hostest with the mostest!  See you soon :)
