The Perfect Home... BUT !

By

My friends are in their perfect home built almost 17 years ago, totally custom-built with every perfect detail for their lifestyle, hobbies, entertaining, and so much attention to detail.

Planning to make this their forever home, the luxury upgrades and extras were added for their enjoyment.

They did not worry about over-improving! It was their "forever" home, and they were not concerned with resale value.

Loving your home, making it perfect for yourself and those most important in your life is what homeownership is all about.

But no matter how you plan... things happen.

Two years ago, they welcomed their perfect grandchild into their loving home and wanted to spend as much time as possible with the extended family. After all, the house with three finished levels had plenty of room.

When the baby visited, the loft became the playroom, and the two bedrooms and full bath ... ideal for the extended family. But due to the pandemic, they wanted to spend a lot more time together safely.

Everything perfect...except :

Perfect except

This is a fifty-five-plus community. Even though this single-family home is sitting on a premium lot surrounded in the back and sides with open land and wooded views, the condo rules are specific about being an adult community.

Three finished levels, four full baths, and almost a thousand sq feet of Trex decking. And the custom gazebo is so lovely for outdoor entertainment, including the TV and sound systems everywhere. I think there were seventeen!

So much more to share in my next update.

Margaret, I am having a hard time understanding why someone would build a 6,000 sq. ft. home with 4 bathrooms in a 55+ community.  That is A LOT of space for just two people.  Yes you can have guests visit for short periods and stay, BUT they cannot live their, and they usually do not like anyone under 18 years of age hang around.  That is a BIG problem if they want the grandchild spending a lot of time there.

George, Those rooms are being used for the family's hobbies including a full media room, billiards, office, guest suite, game room etc etc

Margaret,

And so it goes, times and life changes necessitate more changes... I have personally always disliked the idea of living in an age specific community.  For me, this triviliazes life as it is mean to be lived.  I remember sitting at a park in Paris marveling at the multigenerational individuals playing, enjoying and laughing...That is life...A

Hi Margaret,  Changes are definitely a fact of life.  The home sounds beautiful and definitely large enough for a multi-generational home. However, there are still rules that have to be followed.  Wishing them and you the best. Thanks for sharing.

I know that you will help your friends make the best decision for them, and I'll be following your updates.

55+ communities come with a long list of special amenities and can be just the perfect fit.. except when we want to be surrounded by family for an extended time. I worked with a client once who got an exception to have her (grown) daughter move in for a few months. But eventually they sold and moved south. Still, the condo had been the perfect home for a long time.

Andrea, It is going to be challenging to find another home. This one is a tough act to follow. This past year has been one with many changes

Yes life changing events change the perfect home... hence most people used to stay 7-8 years in the same place... now thanks to Covid I suspect the average increased to 10-12 years:)Endre

Endre, I would like to see how this past year has lengthened the time owners stay in their homes.

Hi Margaret- you know what they say about the best laid plans!  The home sounds lovely!!!  It would be nice if they could lift the home and make it magically appear on a lot in a non-55+ community.

Over the years, I have seen a number of "perfect" homes that came with a caveat which precluded them from being the "forever" home that was envisioned.  In the case you illustrate, having 6,000 square feet in a senior community, created an issue likely not foreseen!

Myrl, It has been the perfect home and luckily they have had some wonderful times over the fifteen-plus years!

I'm extremely interested in learning more about what happens with this property. I get the reasons this house is built this way, but curious as to why they felt confident in adding all of the extended family bells and whistles without HOA input. Were they trying to fly under the radar?
