The year was 1985. I wasn’t expecting it. It came a complete surprise. I had no idea that it would happen. But I got wrapped up in the moment. Adrenaline pumping. Mind racing. Emotions at a fever pitch. And there it was. Even then I didn’t understand the impact of my actions yet. I wouldn’t really understand the impact for at least a year later.
Others saw the impact. It took me a while to see it. Sometimes that is how life change is. Others see the change in us before we do.
There are some days in our lives that we have no clue how important that ordinary day may be. Perhaps it is someone you meet. Perhaps it is somewhere you go. Sometimes it is what you think will be a week of celebration that ends up feeling like and intense mourning. And sometimes what you think is the end turns out to actually be a beginning.
That fateful day in 1985 was the day that (although I honestly didn’t fully understand the full impact of my actions), I bought a set of 18 cassette tapes. It would turn out that simple investment was the day that I chose a very strong personality in the industry to become my mentor.
When you choose a mentor, it doesn’t mean “I will take this from what you say, but leave behind all of those others that you mention”. No, choosing a mentor means that you may be proven wrong, but you will follow this line of thought 100%. You may not be perfect at it. You may only achieve30% or 40% compliance with that train of thought. None the less, following that path changes your life forever.
That day it happened to be a mentor in business for me. And it changed my life forever.
Perhaps this next 7 or 8 days affords you the opportunity to choose a new mentor. Perhaps you realize there is a new path that could radically change your life. Maybe it comes as you join a friend at an event. Maybe it comes as you hear something or see something new that restores a hope and faith in you.
You never know that innocent day. The day in which a choice you make changes your life forever as you choose a new path.
