What I've learned about growing my business

Real Estate Agent with Hollish Hill Group, JPAR Stellar Living

When I first began in real estate, I worked with two very experienced men in our office who had very different, yet successful styles.

One was very direct and was the first to pick up the phone and have a direct conversation with his clients or with agents. Everything about his marketing was direct. He hosted fun, large-scale events and smaller dinner parties at his home. He also made a customized premium item each year and hand delivered one to each of his past clients.

His clients really liked his direct approach and referred him tons of business. He also had tons of repeat customers.

The other man in my office was very systematic. He implemented a By Referral Only program and he had templates and campaigns. At settlement he gifted each client a cutting board that was hand-made by his father. After a client purchased a home, he had another plan - they would receive a series of calls and gifts.

His clients really liked his approach and appreciated all of his "touches".

Both of these very successful agents taught me a lot about generating business. I implemented ideas from each of them to build my business. Eventually I noticed that other agents were adding some of my ideas into their business plan.

There is nothing better than a brokerage that is collaborative and sharing. Years later, I feel fortunate to be part of the leadership team at another amazing and collaborative brokerage where I serve as a coach - sharing all the ideas I have encountered along the way.

If you are looking for an amazing and collaborative team to work with, consider JPAR Stellar Living. We'd love to meet you.

Hi Dana- I love that you were able to learn from both agents and make it a fit for you!  And, that's the key...you have to be true to yourself when you apply what you've learned from other agents.

That is so true. Now that I'm coaching other agents, I love seeing how they take what I teach them and make it their own.

...  that is the unique thing about real estate.  We can Borrow other's ideas that they have shared and not feel we are locked into just ONE way for all clients, and prospecting.  As you have discovered, you have LEARNED, and then applied!!  Good job!!

Good morning Dana. If more new agents were guided by caring mentors, we would have less newbies leave the business before they learn it. Enjoy your day.

Giver Gain because when you give it out in slices it comes back in loaves.

In business, putting your clients first and delivering that service with your authentic style is a recipe for success.

I marinated in a similar office with many successful agents willing to share ideas.  It absolutely shaped how I do business.  Took a bit from each one that fit my personality.

Hi Dana:

These are great examples that different strategies can work equally well, you just have to implement them in your own style.

Hi Dana, you were fortunate to have such strong agents who taught you a lot. As long as we are open to learning, there's a lot of ideas we can incorporate into our business.

And your style can evolve.  When I first started out, I tried a whole bunch of things, then paring down to a few that made most sense to me.  Including breaking into a new highly competitive "farm" zone because I felt most comfortable here. Biggest lesson for me: you have to take a chance and believe in yourself.

I think that an apprenticeship to learn this business is what makes agents stay in the business.  We all want to do our own thing but if you don't take the time to learn the basics and to learn some of the things that work and don't work, then your time in the business will be less than one who does.  Great post.

It's so important to develop a  selling style that works for you!  I found that out a long time ago--some of the sales courses that were pushed on me just didn't feel right. I figured out my own style and it's worked well!

Years ago, I attended a seminar where they posted a photo of a very pierced and tattooed Realtor titled "Who would by from this guy?" It drew lots of laughs and giggles.

Then, the instructor posted the number of people (roughly 145 million) and 3% of Americans have more than 10 piercings (roughly 10 million).

Not a bad niche to go after if you are into those things.  I admit, I have no tattooes or piercings.
