RUG IMPACT can add WOW factor to Stagings

By
Home Stager with Salazar Staging & Custom Interiors

I see a lot of stagings where rugs were not used. I think that the color that rugs bring is essential to having a truly impactful finished project.  Look at these pictures and try to imagine them without the rugs.  Not only do the colorful rugs dramatically help the rooms gain personality, but they anchor seating arrangements and define spaces.  I would love to see others' use of rugs.   I have a wide variety of rugs that serve so many home styles.  I hate storing them, but love using them!

Melody,

I am a rug snob...I think we own about 60 area rugs.  I can't stage without them.  You are correct - they add color and anchor a seating group.  To me they can make or break a space.  Great job.

Rugs are a great way to anchor a room and many times add color to the room.

The rugs you used in the pictures are really nice.  Thank you for sharing your pictures!

Melody,

I love rugs too. I rarely go without them. I think people are much more likely to stop and sit down in rooms that are anchored. When you can get the buyer to sit down you've just increased your odds of selling the house.

I totally agree with you about the importance of an area rug either on a hard surface floor or even a carpeted floor.

In addition to being a busy staging professional, I work several days a week in a showroom as a custom area rug designer who works with both homeowners and interior designers.  An area rug does a number of things that most people don't realize; it defines/creates a space;  pulls a room together; adds color and drama to a room (as a focal point) that may lack interest; can blend into a small space yet open up the room visually and also warmth & texture... as well, it helps improves acoustics, not to mention that it adds comfort!

If you're faced with a rug that is too small for the sofa and/or space, try angling it in front of the sofa.  It's a great look in certain situations!

Linda, I have used that angled approach when a little color was needed on the floor, but space prohibited.  I have a bunch of high quality, shag runners.  These are great in bathrooms or in the case you mentioned above.  Here is a sample of using it on the angle - it was just enough to soften this little sitting room.

I agree.  I have a beautiful frese neutral rug that I used in my dining room.

I am currently in a townhouse with no dining room and no hardwood floors to place the rug.  I have used it at various staging jobs. It warms the room and brings more depth.

Thank you for the blog and photos they're beautiful.

Melody,

Rugs really do make a difference in a grouping.  They help to define a space and are great for breaking up large flooring areas.  Great examples of utilizing carpets in your staging photos!

I agree that rugs do anchor a space but I have had to remove rugs in occupied homes when they created too much visual confusion. Recently I staged a home that had pink and green area rugs covering beautiful cherry wood floors. Because the space was a large, open area the house seemed more updated and formal in appearance without the rugs, the client and realtor agreed.

So yes they are GREAT, but at times they are best if removed. It depends on the situation.

As always your work is beautiful!Phyllis Pafumi

Phyllis, I know what you mean about removing distracting rugs - I pretty much hate little throw (or scatter) rugs anywhere.  They break up the space and the flow.  That's why I stick to larger rugs for creating spaces (in the right instances as you mention) - even my runners are large.  I did an occupied for a bachelor who evidently had gotten a huge PACKAGE of matching rugs.  They were everywhere, in the halls, foyer, bathroom ,bedside.  It reminded me of Yellow Brick Road - talk about distracting.  They were black and gold with big diamonds on them.  I picked them up when I was staging, but then noticed they were all back in the scene when I looked at the realtor's pictures online.  You can lead a horse to water.....

Thanks for the compliment,

Mel

You are right, rugs really pull a room together.  In the past couple of months I have had the home owner buy the rug I chose for the staging because it went so well with their furniture!

Speaking of Rugs:

Here are a couple tips on rugs:

To store them, check with your local rug store and see if they will give (or sell) you old cardboard tubes they use to wrap rugs around.  These tubes will keep your rugs so much more well preserved.

It's important to keep rugs up off the ground, even when wrapped around tubes.  Mice can get in (on the ground) and do some serious damage, actually resulting in a complete loss.  I have an old Fooze Ball table with the metal bars sticking out on either side.  These are great for storing the rugs.

Check with your local rug store to see if they sell remnants.  Often times, all we need is a solid piece of shag rug to enhance a staged room.  I've picked up all sizes of remnants for mere pennies on the dollar.

Would really love to hear from others on storing rugs.

Thanks,

mel
