Women's Clothing Is a Pain-in-the- - - -

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Commercial, Referral Divison RRE-BRO-LIC-75443

This morning I read a post from Lauren Williams called Purses-are-pains-in-the-----. I agree with her, although I think our viewpoint is probably a minority opinion. But here's what popped next into my head- the reason we have to use purses is because women's clothing is different than men's and we can't throw a wallet into our pocket. And that brought my pondering to all the ways women's clothing is inferior to mens. That is the point of this non-real-estate post.

So here we go.

First, to get the REASON clothing is different right out there. It's because the fashion industry wants to make sure women's clothing is form fitting and sexy. Not useful. There is no industry requirement that women's clothing be useful. There should be. And if there were, we'd have a lot more options. I do think it's possible to make sexy clothing that is useful. So here are the issues, female clothing designers. Please help!

Warmth

Did you ever pick up a men's flannel shirt, and compare it to a women's? The male version is WARM. It's thicker, usually has a pocket or two, and can be worn by itself if needed and will keep the wearer toasty. The women's is much thinner material, with no pockets or just decorative ones, and is intended to look good.

And this doesn't just pertain to shirts. Pick up two sweaters, again to compare the difference between men and women's choices. One is nice and warm and cozy. One is not. Guess which is which.

And gloves! I was trying to find work gloves, you know, for doing work outside, that fit me AND were warm and well-made. I'm still looking. Men's work gloves are for working. Women's come in pink. Please.

And don't even get me started on socks.

Pockets

This was already mentioned above, but is important to mention here. Women's pockets are made to be virtually undetectable. So they are typically small. Maybe you could stick a few dollar bills or a key with no keychain in your pocket. Maybe. They're useless for actually putting things in. Men's pants have tons of room in those pockets for stuff.

C'mon!

Belt Loops

Another issue with women's clothing - lack of belt loops. I just compared jeans. First, a pair of women's blue jeans from Duluth, a company that sells "workwear" for men and women. And the jeans are good quality (and actually do have some pockets, which is rare). BUT they have just four belt loops in total. One on each side of the front snap, and one on each side. So there are NO belt loops in the back. Which is a problem for several reasons.

1) If you put a belt on the pants, and sit down, the belt is no longer resting on the pants, it's resting on your back. How useful is that?

2) You cannot use the belt for anything except decoration. So let's say you wanted to attach something to the belt in the back. You can't. Useless.

By the way, I compared the jeans above to a pair of Dickies men's jeans, and then to a pair of Redhead brand men's jeans. Both had five belt loops in the back and two in the front. Now THAT makes sense.

Comfort

I can't believe there was ever a customer usage study in the clothing industry that assessed whether women wanted comfortable clothing. Because most of women's clothing is not comfortable. Unless you buy sweats but that's not the most professional look.

Some of the issues? Snaps that dig. Waist bands that are too loose or too tight (neither are comfortable). We already talked about belts that ride up onto your back. Uncomfortable. And about warmth. If you're freezing, you're not comfortable.

Summary

I totally believe women's clothing can look good AND be comfortable and useful. Come on, clothing industry, let's change some things. Instead of the flannel LOOK of clothes, what about making a shirt that is the same flannel material found in men's clothes but in solid colors. A dark forest-green flannel shirt. That is warm. And looks great. That would work! Or jeans that are measured using a real women's body - not a barbie doll. With pockets that have room for stuff. So those of us who hate carrying around a purse won't have to.

Am I alone in this wish?

Great post on why the fashion industry is messed up. I try to stick to outdoor clothing to get the pockets, belt loops & other extras. It's a shame because then that adds to the price of the item. We'd think you might use this shirt when you're in Patagonia -- extra $50 please.

Hi Kat - although not from experience I agree that many times women's clothing is form over function.

Kat!

I am laughing as hard as I am crying. I put on a blouse this morning and looked in the mirror - oh my gosh, I had to wear another top underneath the one I selected because where the teeny tiny first button was, was inappropriate. And what's with buttons so tiny even a toddler couldn't button?

I once worked at Division Chevrolet in Chicago where they sold auto parts. I was the first female to get hired and I was seventeen years old. The requirement was every employee had to wear a uniform. Well, the boss guy decided to have a dress customized for me to wear, same color blue as the men's blue uniforms and material too. Yay! I was so excited. But when the uniform arrived, it was a wrap around dress with no buttons, snaps, or zippers. It was short, above my knee and a piece of fabric to tie around my waist. The bodice was something even my High School wouldn't allow me to wear. I wore the damn thing but put other garments underneath to cover my skin.

All those things you mentioned have been a royal pain in the butt for me too! Women and young girls come in different sizes, shapes, widths, and heights. Buy a pair of jeans with belt loops and you can't find a belt to fit inside the loops! A few years ago I showed a property to a buyer and the buyer said to me, do you always wear tight pants?  She was someone who made her own clothes and I was so embarrassed. That's all they sell in Texas! And if they fit when you try them on and wash them, they shrink! I don't have a sewing machine and I never learned how to sew!

No Kat, you're not alone. And shoes never mind the shoes. Trying to put a decent, practical outfit together is next to impossible. And maybe that's why many women who go out to dinner don't eat, but will order and take out so that when they get home, they can eat dinner comfortably! At least we can buy BIG purses to put left over food inside, our keys, wallets, phone, and all that other stuff.... sigh.

What a great, great blog post! You nailed it!!!

I could have sworn I responded a few days ago! Thank you so much for your comment! When I go out to eat, I eat. Otherwise, what's the point? I do know there are people who pick at their food and finish eating it later. I'm glad I'm not alone! Enjoy your day!

What a fun post! I do not buy pants or jackets without pockets. And they are not easy to find!

Kat, it is funny to look at our, men, comments compared to those of the ladies!  There is a distinct difference in length and passion.  We obviously do not suffer the problem and thus not had problem to think too much on it.  Gloves...I have long found them difficult to find that they fit and warm at the same time.  When I find a good pair, I buy at least one extra pair for when the 1st have no more to give.

The flannel shirts I enjoy as well and it does seem to be more and more difficult to find just a solid color.  As to the style difference, call me a bit off center, I have always found it quite acceptable to see a lady wearing a mans shirt be it flannel or dress.  Shows off a sense of confidence I believe.

As far as the dresses and pants...I have always thought you gals to be a tough lot.  When the weather is butt a$$ cold and you see a lady wearing a dress, or slacks.  Good golly I am freezing and can not help but wonder how the heck you all even can go outside dressed like that in the cold cold weather.

Make it a great day Kat, enjoy your Easter and the next time I see a flannel worthy, I will send you the make.  lol  Mark

Thank you so much Mark, especially for the offer to let me know when you see a worthy flannel item! And you're right, men can't be as passionate about this topic because your needs are all met! :-)

Enjoy your day!

Sounds like there's a business opportunity for you!

I've simplified my clothing choices over the years.  Khaki pants for any time I'm going out paired with a polo shirt.  I'm not sure I even remember how to tie a tie at this point.  I found a pair of loafer style shoes I like and were convenient for real estate, I think I'm on about pair 15, as they wear out I turn them into my next pair of yard shoes :)

I know I've seen shopping with Liz the discrepancies in what a "size" means.  What is a certain fit for one manufacturer may be totally different for another brand.

Apr 04, 2021 06:15 AM
Kat Palmiotti

I think manufacturers started making women's clothes bigger but calling it the same size. So an 8 now is what a 10 used to be, 6 is what an 8 used to be. That's my best guess, because I wear a smaller size than I used to, but it's not because I shrunk.

And while I never wore a tie, I did wear a lot of suits and dresses. Guess what I have very little of in my closet now - no suits, and only a few dresses.

Enjoy your day!

This is one of the reasons I work in jeans for the most part.  They are comfortable and have pockets. I don't wear belts, but find they do have that extra loop in the back.  They are made by Lane Bryant, the store for us larger gals.  (If they ever stop making them, I will lose my mind.)

From a plus size gal, I will ad that form fitting goes out the window from designers and you are left with parachutes.  It's ridiculous and makes large women look larger.

There's no winning in women's clothing.  And don't get me started on shoes!!!!

Apr 04, 2021 09:49 AM
Kat Palmiotti

Oh, I totally agree about clothing, including that the clothing for larger sizes is not made shapely at all. And shoes - I am not a fan of heels. I want something comfortable that I can run around in. Thanks for your comment!

Realistically for me, I love my totes which carry everything from various keys, even files, a phone charger and my notebook.  Call me old fashioned. I do try to wear something that has a pocket for my phone for when I put my tote-du-jour down, usually in a short coat or suit jacket.  Other than that? Black tights with solid colored tops that cover my butt (never blouses or skirts). As to shoes, they have to be comfortable yet stylish, often ankle boots.  Add some "good" jewelry, and I'm ready to do business on the high end Monterey Peninsula. PS. Too casual is not advised here.

When I'm hiking in the woods with a client, I need to carry everything on my body - lugging around a pocket book doesn't work. So I definitely look for clothes with lots of storage space!

Hi Kat,
I absolutely agree! There is no reason women's clothes can't look good AND be useful.  Personally, I never buy pants without pockets that can actually serve a purpose. They not only NEED pockets but pockets deep enough to hold in whatever you put in there and for me that's usually a golf ball, tees, ball markers, and a repair tool.
