Curb Appeal: The Wonderful Versatility of Succulents!

By

We spotted this big fallen log on a property with acreage (pictured above). The owners liked the natural feel to the fallen log.  Instead of having it hauled away, it is now repurposed as a planter for an assortment of succulents.

This would also work in a xeric-garden setting, where a smaller log could create the same natural care free feeling.  Succulents are a low maintenance plant, and they keep reproducing themselves. There are endless possibilities and boundless varieties of succulents.

There are many old oaks that are dead in the larger rural areas, and most people just let them lie like that.  They become sculptures in a sense. A

Love it, Alexandra... I'm always in awe of people who come up with something like this. Not an option for me even on a smaller scale... my Bingo would destroy it in a NY minute.

Hello Alexandra and Ron - photo opportunities abound when you are aware.  I tend to capture more in my memories as my camera abilities remain woefully inadequate.

Michael,

As a child I enjoyed finding things off the beaten track.  I was often staying my grandparents while my parents were away on projects in the Middle East...I learned to entertain myself both by reading and on the long walks they liked to take.  A

I think that makes for an amazing planter and looks wonderful.  At first, I thought that is what sprung to life from the dead tree without any human intervention, I would have been amazed.  Nature always amazes me though!

Brian,

I have seen it happen when wildflowers make a home of a dead tree, it is always special.  A

How pretty! I love when I see flowers growing in a place that looks like growing would be difficult. A sidewalk. Out of a rock. Over a tree.

Enjoy your day!

Kat,

When we lived in Los Angeles, we were invited to speak at a school that was in a not so nice neighborhood.  The school was caged in with 10 foot chain link and barbed wire on top...And police examining ID and cars as they came in.  As we were driving there, I saw a lot with broken concrete from which a big rose bush was blooming.  It was a signal of hope. Succulents are on sale in my local nurseries in Flower Mound, TX. I never knew you could plant them on fallen logs. What a great idea!!! Now that is what I call natural yard art! I never did care for the metal yard art but a fallen log with an array of succulents would be very beautiful and interesting too!

I have seen them in large clam shells, and all kinds of assorted containers.  They thrive easily and well.  A
