Whether we like it or not the modern world has created a form of bondage that is hard to escape. Widespread access to the internet, with its hundreds of media outlets and social media, have us tuned in to the digital world 24 hours a day.
In all fairness, it would be difficult to conduct business without the quick access to information that the digital age has afforded us. We can find almost any form of information with just a few keystrokes.
I never want to go back to the old days of telephone books, catalogs, and paper maps. Nor do I wish to return to limiting my television entertainment to six channels.
Yet, at the same time, we have created a form of captivity, one of our own making. All too often you see people that cannot stop looking at their screens. Often more than one at a time.
Today I escaped my bondage, at least temporarily. I was playing an early morning tennis match and decided to walk to the courts about ¾ mile from my home. About halfway there I realized I had left my phone at home. At first, I was flustered. What to do? Should I turn around and go back home and retrieve my electronic companion? As I paused for a second it dawned on me that I really did not need it. I could disappear from the internet and the world would be fine without me.
I am sure my phone was confused. In my calendar was an appointment to play tennis. Like any good phone, it was likely trying in vain to alert me that it was time to leave. It did not know that I had left it on my dresser long past the time I was supposed to be in another place. As expected, when I got home there was an unacknowledged alert on my phone reminding me to play. No worries, I was on time.
If you are wondering, I won my match. Even without my phone.
