Cost of learning

Lately I have pondered ways to increase the learning potential. Having at one point been measured with an IQ around 175 in the 3rd grade, I have learned a lot (and forgotten a bit) along the way. Lately I think I have found something to increase how well we learn something.

I have started creating adrenaline inducing situations. I think we all agree that when a mistake costs us thousands of dollars, we learn never to duplicate that mistake, right? And yet if an error only costs us 50 cents, it is not a big deal.

So, lately I am working on ways to have adrenaline pumping as I learn to increase the depth of retention of the new lesson. At first, I am applying this to myself, and soon I will apply this to those that I coach and mentor.

Anything I can do to ingrain the lesson without the cost of thousands of dollars, right?

Rocky, it is fun to take classes and learn new things in order to save us that .50 we may lose.

Hi Rocky - a couple of points.  First of all, education is most retained if it is used immediately.  That being said another way is spaced repitition.  Reading of listening to something 6 times in a week has the largest retention.

Hi Rocky- interesting correlation between adrenalin and learning. I remember a study they did with nuns who lived long and also had a good memory. Besides a healthy way of eating they also attributed it to continuing to learn but not the same thing...they learned something new.

Rocky I have a PHD in mistakes, but I rarely make the same mistake twice, even when the mistake did not cost me anything.  A mistake is a mistake regardless of the cost.

Hello Rocky.....

You are blessed with having a fantastic I.Q.

I am not there with you, but I did have 6 years of learning  after earning a B.S.

Making a mistake is the best way of learning to do something the right way. Just don't keep making the same mistake. Remember what Einstein said about that.

Learning something new is always worthwhile, however, if you don't use it, you will lose it. Repetition, and continued usage is the only way it will stay with you. Passage of time renders one devoid of previous skills. At one time, I could disassemble and reassemble an M1 Garand rifle with my eyes closed. At this time in my live, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Just keep learning for new information, but more important it keeps you from stagnating.

Yes Ronald, it would seem that in time memories can fade for what used to be effortless. Hopefully you won't need to assemble the rifle with your eyes closed ever again.
