ATTITUDE CHECK FOR YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS

By

“Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude.” Zig Ziglar

The fact is that people do not put enough emphasis on how attitude affects performance. Yes, attitudes DO affect performance. In fact, they affect everything that we do.

Now if you doubt that then look back at the involuntary terminations in your organization. You will probably find that most of the terminations occurred due to poor attitudes and behaviors rather than lack of skills.

There is a strong link between attitude and performance. Let’s start with defining what attitude means in this context. An attitude is a pattern of thought. It affects how we approach everything we do. If you change your attitude and change your outlook you will change your outcomes. Not that this is as easy as turning on a switch. It is not that easy. You can change your attitude, your outlook, and how you think but it will take real commitment, discipline and desire to change your old habits. Would you agree? In other words, you can do it, but you really must work hard at making the change.

The way we think impacts our habits and behavior and this has impact on the outcomes we receive. If we want to get different and lasting outcomes, it is not enough to change our behavior. We must start with changing our attitudes. This will, in turn, change our behavior, which will result in a change in our outcomes and results.

We have developed attitudes from our past experiences. All of us can think of an unpleasant experience that we have had in the past. We may have tried to start a business or work in sales. Then something negative happened. Did you ever have an experience of getting supposedly well-meaning advice from friends who wanted to protect you from failure? Or have you suffered sales rejection and who hasn’t?   You probably wanted to avoid another unpleasant experience again, so you focused on what didn’t work rather than the rewards of success.

Would you agree that you need to have passion to be successful? I do. What is your passion? What drives you? What is your why? If you have a sales job and your heart is not in it, you might want to consider stopping that and searching for what you really desire. On the other hand, if you really love real estate sales you should be focusing on the rewards. You will have obstacles, but you can plan for them and anticipate them. Changing your thought patterns and your outlook is about changing attitudes. Focus on the reward of more sales rather than the rejection.

Then make sure that your new behavior is consistent with your new attitude. Stay focused on what you want and what can go right, in short what you can become.

If you are the leader, you will set the example and ultimately the values and culture of your team.  For a similar post on our web site see TAKE YOUR ATTITUDE TO THE NEXT LEVEL BUSINESS WILL FOLLOW.

Oh yes attitude makes all the difference. There's an agent around here that when she calls, her first words are "Hi, this is --------------and I am the Top Sales Agent in my company. Why start off with that attitude? It doesn't impress me!

Definitely good advice. A bad attitude shows and does not create good outcomes. I would think it's hard to change an attitude

Focus comes right up there for me.  What do I want the outcome to be and don't waver no matter what.  Stay positite it can be done. Attitude is one of the big tools to get there.

Hi Grant:

Great article on such an important topic, for life and for business. Ziglar's quote remains as true as ever!

I particularly liked this statement - "The way we think impacts our habits and our behavior and this has impact on the outcomes we receive."

Enjoy your weekend.

Jeff

Amen and Amen! I often tell people I meet that they should attend an AA meeting, especially those who are providing services to others. Most get upset believing AA means Alcohol Anonymous until I inform them that it stands for Attitude Adjustment.

Oh, attitude is EVERYTHING as they say, Grant! I am a BIG believer in that - in the way we present ourselves to others as @Endre Barath mentioned. Sometimes it's just a simple change in tone or words that can make ALL of the difference.

Wonderful post, as always, Grant!

As I get older, I notice more often those pp that have a poor attitude--those that complain about every little inconvenience-- the traffic light that takes too long or the groceries bagged incorrectly or ..well there's just so many things people can gripe about. To me, not worth the negative energy.  My grandfather taught me how very lucky we are to live in the USA.  PRetty The only thing I get annoyed with is when someone says they will do something..and don't follow through!

A ''can do'',  head down, hands on, ''work hard and do the job'' mentality will afford one a lot of opportunities.
