Friday Photo: Another Sign of Spring--Cormorants Building Nests

By

This is the time of the year when the cormorants return to our ocean side trees.  Pictured above are nests (those dark irregular clumps on the eucalyptus trees.

In a few weeks they will be sitting on their eggs, and soon after teaching their fledglings to fly and catch fish.  As summer wanes, they will leave for warmer areas...

Wishing Everyone A Happy Friday and a great weekend ahead!

Myrl,

All the eucalyptus trees by the ocean are filled.  We call them cormorant condos.  They also ruin the trees, and the city has cut quite a few down, because they are dead and highly flammable.  A

Sharon,

They are big birds and excel at fishing.  In the old days, they were used by people for fishing by tying a rope to their necks and bringing the fish in so they could not swallow it.  A

Brian,

When I meditate, I focus on a sound to quiet my mind, and it often is the song of the birds...very relaxing.  A

Beth,

I take the majority of the photos, and sometimes Ron does.  We have different points of view, and I love that.  A

Kat,

You reminded me with your comment of Robin Williams quote on Spring, 'Spring is nature's way of saying, Let's party!'

Hi Ron and Alexandra- this is such a fun time of year. The bluebirds are just beginning another nest in our backyard and recently I've seen juvenile squirrels wandering around. So much to see.

Such interesting birds, aren't they?  You know you're around water when you see them. I enjoy watching them dive.

Debb,

They are!  We often see them drying their wings.  They spread them way out and just stand there.  A

Alexandra and Ron, loved your photo of all the Cormorant nests in the tree.  I am used to seeing 1 nest in the trees where we live.  In fact, one year we had two little bluebirds build a nest -  in a day -- in our mailbox which was attached to our house.  Funny thing is they opened the top cover and built the nest neatly inside and then the two perched, one on either side and on top of the mailbox.  It was such a surprise when I walked out our front door to get the mail.  I hated to shoo them away and reclaim our mailbox.  Can't imagine what the mailman thought :)
