Kindness - Is it a Lost Art?

Everyone knows that todays market is a crazy one.  We have potential buyers lined up outside open houses and going waaaaaay beyond normal terms in their offers, we have listing agents getting to put together information on tons of multiple offers per listing, we have buyers agents  with customers putting in offers over and over and not coming out the "winner".  Yes, tempers are running short, we have frustration running rampant all day long from all parties.

   Be Kind

In all of this madness and chaos there is really one thing you can control and that is how you treat each other.   Real estate agents on both sides of a transaction are working towards the same goal - to get the house sold with terms that both seller and buyer can agree on.  It takes a lot to accomplish this goal.

Realizing that some kindness goes a long way.  Calling/texting a listing agent over and over again when they don't pick up the phone on the first call - leave a message.  Let the buyers agents know in a timely manner that their buyers' offer was not chosen and that you'll let them know if anything changes.  It's just little things that can go a long way towards making the market we find ourselves in work a little better and run a little smoother.

If all else fails, remember you WILL have to work with these agents again at some point in the future and unkind treatment tends to stick in a persons' memory for a long time.

Yes, yes, yes. This is so true. Being kind costs nothing but can pay huge rewards. And the ripples we make by being kind can grow and grow.

Hello Vickie, generally kindness is not a loss art, but some people take advantage for being kind to them.

Vickie, I do believe kindness, courtesy, respect all have gone out the windows with some, and just plain sad!

Hello Vickie - real estate markets change but there is no reason to think kindness is lost.  Evidence of it continue to provide hope, good feeling and generally a positive approach to life.  Thanks to Carol Williams for spotlighting this post in her SCS Second Chance Saturday post today.

Vickie, Yes, kindness goes a long way. May I also mention patience and trying to understand the perspective of the other party vs. just assuming. I see a lot of assuming out there. And you know what they say about that.

I absolutely agree with you. I suppose 20 years of lending gives me a better perspective, but I do not understand the vitriol and lack of professionalism that some Realtors exhibit. Being rude does not make a transaction go faster. But, I will not have to work with certain people in the future, which makes your point.

Vickie

I agree it is important to be kind and call each agent and let them know their offer was not accepted. In a market like this, I have no idea why an agent would have an Open House and have a spectacle of buyers outside the sellers' house some without agents who may not even be qualified when there are plenty of qualified buyers waiting to see this house with their agents. Is this kind?

Glad Carol Featured this as I missed this post

Hi Vickie:

It IS a challenging market for all, and a bit of kindness to all involved, whatever the role, can make a huge difference. It's not hard to do!

Vickie, I agree, especially with a CRAZY market, you should show kindness, other agents will remember that, not short tempers.
