A Grain Of Salt. . .

Industry Observer CalBRE #01165532

A Grain Of Salt. . .

Yeah, I admit to a bit of skepticism.  It’s healthy, right?  But like anything, the recipe of life is defined not only with ingredients but with measurements and knowledge of a world greater than any one object where all sorts of things are combined to create works that can become a masterpiece or a mishap.  Many may eventually fall into the "meh" category. Let's be honest, okay?

Any of my culinary adventures seem to have varying results. Somewhere between the suspicious and barely edible category. Life, on the other hand, offers some other options.

Lessons can be learned from books as well as on-the-job-training.  Attempts that seem apprentice-like or  amateurish can eventually lead to different destinations.

Sometimes a work-in-progress is nothing but a piece-of-work.  As in a real piece of work.  Now where did I place that sarcasm font when I need it most? Perhaps it's over there next to that missing spiralizer or that spoonful of sugar. It's always something. Too much of this. Not enough of that.

I may not know my way around that room but even John Donne seemed to have a clue about the importance of the kitchen world way back when he mentioned it in one of my favorite quotes.  After all - no man is an island.   Not even, or especially, when it matters most.

I find it helpful to consider all of my spices (Options) when preparing a meal (Task) and select only those that will get me my desired meal (results).

Love the photo - bread, wine, pans are ready to go. That's my kind of space!

As for cooking, my poor mom wanted to teach me how to cook when I was a teenager but I was much more interested in other things. So I learned to cook on my own and now love to cook and try new things. In fact, I'm starting a cooking club. Or at least I'm planning to.

Enjoy your day!

Hello Kat - I remember a couple of years ago reading some of your posts where you were exploring cooking in some classes.  It must have been when you lived in New York before relocating to Montana.

Your culinary adventures sound a lot like mine, haha.  If there was a sarcasm font, I would likely be using it 90% of the time.

Hello Brian - and on second thought, I can see it being overused.  Another case of unintended consequences, I guess.

My knowledge of cooking is like my knowledge of many things, I know OF it, but don't ask me to do it :)

So many forms of NaCl to choose from too!

I subscribed to an annual pass to Masterclass and have watched a French master teach how to make bread,  A Mexican chef teach some basics of making tortillas and sauces.  It's all good, and interesting, and well taught, but the odds of me actually venturing into the kitchen and spending the time it takes to make proper sourdough bread is not so good!

Hello Bill(and Liz too) - well, you definitely deserve an "A" for effort.  I can't recall taking a cooking class but I do remember some female friends of mine giving me their cleverly composed copy of food preparation tips and necessary supplies when I moved out of the house just before I turned 21.  I didn't realize the different techniques in mastery of the PB&J🙃.

Good morning Michael,

I am happy to report that Ron knows his way around the kitchen.  And I enjoy cooking.  We often work together in the kitchen to make dinner...We keep it simple these days.

Interesting that you quote John Donne,  I remember his poetry from my English Lit class.  No man is an island indeed, and ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee!  That line always stuck in my head!  I took that one with a grain of salt.  Happy Tuesday, A

Hello Alexandra and Ron - I remember using that quote in a junior high school speech contest - not sure if I first "found" it in a class or where but I have enjoyed it for a long time.

I had a cousin that used to call me a lazy cook but she was a great southern cook except her spaghetti was God awful. How do you ruin spaghetti. The sauce of course. I had a husband who thought I should stay in the kitchen so he could teach me how to cook. I know how to cook. I just like simple and quick.

Hi Michael- I learned to cook watching my grandmother who I don't think ever measured anything!  I was watching someone make homemade chocolate croissants the other day and good grief...now I see why those things are so expensive!

Michael Jacobs - That stock photo looks tasty and tempting! My kitchen is an ordinary one without an island but it has lots of cabinets and counter space. Plus, it's much bigger than my mother had. She would have appreciated my kitchen. From the day she got married until the day she died, she had the same old kitchen - just the basics; no island. Living as a business woman on the go for so many years I enjoyed eating out. When CO-VID began I was forced back into my own kitchen and took it with a grain of salt. Ironically, I now prefer to eat home preparing food and I appreciate what I have. the food I prepare, and what I eat now more than before. Today, even when I buy a fresh pineapple, I don't even dream about being on an Island drinking fine wines or tasting something someone else prepared for my benefit.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - we often hear, especially in real estate, that kitchens make a home but it's really the people who transform an ordinary house into a home.  And it's cooks - of all kinds - that create memories.  Some tastier than others but often a reminder of things we have enjoyed.
