Backspace...Delete...Move On

No, it’s not what you’s not about what others might say.

The other day while commenting, my little fingers were just whizzing away. It wasn’t anything that was negative or derogatory...not at all.

But I stopped and asked myself...Is all this really necessary?  I’d already made a comment that showed I’d actually read the post.

And more to the point, what I was writing was extraneous or perhaps just added fluff to my comment.

And so, I reread my comment and decided to backspace and delete the extra words.

I asked myself if what I added would matter to the author or add anything to the conversation other than the one going on in my head. (one of many)  I asked myself if what I added would be of interest to others reading my comment (assuming that anyone would read it)

The point is, when you are tempted to say something, ask yourself if it’s to add to the conversation or to add to your ego.

There are times when less is more than enough.

The backspace and delete buttons get used quite often on my keyboard, haha.  I usually try to keep my comments short and sweet, with an emphasis on sweet.

But why use discretion when there's a chance to hijack a Featured post?? <evil grin>

That kind of hijacking, not so bad.  The more recent kind, better to let some sleeping dogs take their naps.

Bill- do you remember the hijacked posts we used to have?  Lots of fun.

I back space and delete a lot but most of that is because we don't have a working spell check. And I tend to cut to the chase and not add a lot of fluff

Hi Ed- if it weren't for Grammarly no one could read what I type.

Good morning Kathy, sometimes, less is more. When I click on a post, I do scroll down and read some of the comments, sometimes, all of them. Great advice!

Hi Kathy,

Yes, sometimes less is enough. It's like when a lawyer instructs you to only answer the question asked and nothing more.

Ah yes, Doug!!!  That runny mouth could get you into trouble.

Alexandra- I think we all want to have that back and forth conversation like in real life but it's not always possible here.

Interesting. I think the real estate business is one which is full of ego (with lots of type A personality to boot). Sometimes stroking the ego of our fellow agents can make us a few extra $$$$

Hi Jeffrey-that is also a good and valid point!

Love it Kathy. I just left a rather lengthy comment on a post regarding winning bids in today's market. I felt it was important to point out a few more ideas to help out agents.  Rarely do I leave a novel-length comment!!

Wise words of advice! I have had to learn this skill in AR and on social media too  Kathy. I answer 60% less questions in our AR Q&A the last 2 years because I can't seem to answer many of them without decapitating the poster with my retort.

Best to remain silent and kind.

I've found myself doing the same thing so many times.  Less is always more.  If you give too long a comment, maybe it should be a post.

Oh, I've been there more than once. Sadly, I didn't always backspace or delete. There is great value in an unexpressed thought.
