John Bernard Lee was born in either County Cork or Brentford, London back in 1908 to Edmund and Nellie. When he was six his father had him on the stage in a sketch called “The Double Event” at the Oxford Music Hall. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, while working as a fruit porter to pay his fees.
After graduation he worked in the repertory theatre in Rusholme, Manchester before working on the West End stage. His first screen debut was in The Double Event in 1934. He served with the Royal Sussex Regiment during World War II. After the war he appeared in several movies, there are just too many to mention.
While most of you have not heard of John, maybe you’ll recognize him in his role of M in the first eleven James Bond films.
