7 Smart Moving Tips

Declutter, Sell or donate. Your first step should be to declutter your home and get rid of any items your family no longer needs. You should do this months in advance— long before you start packing.

Start researching and reserving services early. Book your packers, movers and moving trucks early. This will ensure you get the dates you want (as well as the best rates).

Get creative with packing materials. You don’t necessarily need packing peanuts or costly bubble wrap to keep your items safe. Use bath towels, hand towels, dishcloths, blankets, sheets, socks and other soft belongings instead. (They need to be packed anyway, after all.)  You do not necessarily have to empty every drawer of furniture you are moving. Wrap the drawer in Saran wrap, so the contents do not fall out, but it’s ready to reinstall in a flash, and you don’t have to waste a box.

Label boxes systematically. Pack items by room and label each group of boxes with its own color (using stickers or a marker). This makes them easy to spot when loading, unloading and unpacking.  (You can even cut pieces of construction paper into pieces and tape to boxes for larger color labels to spot.)

Plan for your pets and kids. Little ones and pets could get in the way during the big move, so make sure you arrange for them to stay somewhere safe until you’re more settled.

Pack an overnight bag for each member of the family. Think about what you will want access to on moving day and on the first night in your new place. Make sure to include snacks, water and anything else you might need. (Toilet paper and paper towels are a must!)

If packing and prepping the house for the next buyer has been more than enough. Plan on bringing in a cleaning crew to clean up behind you. You have a big enough job ahead of you without having to worry about leaving your old home move in ready for the new buyers. You are expecting your new home ready to move into, so extend that courtesy to your buyers.
