Where To Find Mural Artwork In Charlotte

When people think of the Queen City, they don't normally think in terms of a rich legacy of mural artwork. In fact mural artwork is on the rise and Charlotte offers more than 70 murals to enjoy throughout the metro area.

Here's a list of five of the best known Charlotte neighborhoods for mural artwork, but keep in mind that murals are tucked into other neighborhoods all over the Queen City... in Plaza Midwood, Tuckaseegee, Eastway, Sugar Creek Greenway, Midtown.

South End Neighborhood: features numerous murals throughout the neighborhood. In fact, public art is considered one of the signature features of the Southend neighborhood, which bills itself as "the only neighborhood that doubles as a canvas." Street murals are a big part of the South End art experience. One of the neighborhood's newest murals is the Heart Wall. Then there's the Magic Carpet mural across from Atherton Mill in Southend, the South End Community mural, the Wilmore Goldmine mural. For a complete list of murals in the South End neighborhood, click here.

NODA Neighborhood: starting at the corner of North Davidson and 35th Street where you'll find the the 46 by 10 foot Bloom mural, you can do a walking tour of murals and street art sprinkled throughout the NODA streets. More information about the NODA Art Walk Tour. Click here for the NODA Ourdoor Interactive Art Map.

Uptown Charlotte: you can do a walking tour of 19 murals on the Murals Only Artwalk starting at 5th and Tryon Streets in Uptown Charlotte. More information about the murals you will see on the Murals Only Artwalk.

West End: Charlotte's historic West End is now home to "The Great Escape," a series of eight painted panels about the Underground Railroad by Charlotte artist Abel Jackson. It is currently located at 1635 West Trade Street around the Five Points Plaza in Historic West End.

Camp North End: a mix between industrial art collective, shopping center, and an outdoor food hall. Camp North End is a massive adaptive reuse project on a 76-acre industrial site north of Uptown. It's now home to over 30 amazing murals.

Hi Joan... I suspect many cities of our size now have a certain amount of mural and public art... Charlotte's public art has simply exploded in the past decade.

Nina,

What a nice presentation of Charlottes's murals.  When we worked in Fuquay-Varina, they had magnificent murals on almost every building that was done by plein air artists.  We have several in town here and many more in Santa Barbara.  A

Hi Alexandra... I suspect a lot of cities, both large and small, are now welcoming mural art... no two pieces are every alike and most tell a story.

Good morning, Hannah... got my last entry in by the skin of my teeth. And that's the amazing thing about murals and public art... they do tell a very personal story about the artist and the city.

I like seeing murals on walls, it is certainly nicer than just a plain wall.  I love seeing the artistic abilities of others.

Hi Nina:

You always stop by and admire the wall art I share from Carlsbad and have for some years, so it was a special treat for me to see these beautiful murals in your community...what variety! Thank you for such visual pleasure - while I have no artistic talents I certainly appreciate what artists can create!

Jeff

Jeff Dowler, CRS hi Jeff... I come from a family of artists (mu aunt was exhibiting her work in New Mexico into her 80's). But personally I have no artistic talent... only an ability to enjoy and appreciate art. I love murals like this because they tell a story... and I was thinking about you and your mural posts when I was writing this one. Glad you had a chance to get a peek at Charlotte's wall art.

Hope you are well. I'm impressed with the variety of art you have shared. Plan to send this link to my sister who has done walls of ceramic murals in Natick, Mass. and major stained glass pieces there also. She;ll enjoy your post! Lynn

Lynn B. Friedman CRS Atlanta, GA 404-939-2727 hi Lynn... doing well... or should I say as well as can be expected after two cataract surgeries since last March, two knee surgeries between last December and February and now facing a hip replacement! This getting old business is certanly not for sissies! :)

Charlotte has a truly vibrant art scene... something many people don't know about our city. Trust your sister will enjoy... ceramic murals and stained glass are a whole other amazing genre.
