James Dray inspired me to refresh this blog which I wrote back in 2018. See his blog "Theodore Matthew Michael Kuhn Jr." to see the reason why!
I have updated the material and added an image and videos. For those who enjoy this kind of adventure, I would caution you to do some research before visiting Sedona. Due to the influence of social media and also COVID, some jeep trails can only be accessed by permit. Trails that are open to the public can have heavy 4-wheel-drive traffic. Parking for hiking is also limited.
(April 2021) --> The Broken Arrow Trail is open. I got that confirmed by one of our Jeep "enthusiast" friends.
Broken Arrow ~ Sedona Arizona
The 1950's Movie - Broken Arrow
James Stewart along with Jeff Chandler starred in this movie. Many of the scenes were shot right here in what is now the neighborhood of Broken Arrow, Broken Arrow Vista, and Doodlebug #2.
A REALTOR® Founded Pink Jeep!
This off-road trail was popularized by a real estate agent named Don Pratt. He went to Waikiki Beach's pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel. He would show homes in the Broken Arrow Estates back in 1958 and founded Pink Jeep Tours using that iconic color of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Pink Jeeps maintains this Broken Arrow trail. The entire trail ride takes about 2 hours or more. The red Rubicon Jeep above is my husband going down one of the steeper formations near Merry-Go-Round Rock. All you can see out the window in a couple of areas is the ground. I decided to get out and take the picture....!
It's Not For The Faint Of Heart!
This is a grueling drive. The reason it takes two hours is the terrain. You can only take a jeep or similar 4 wheel drive vehicle into this area. Wider vehicles may not make it through some of the more narrow portions of the trail. The video below will point that fact out! Fortunately for the driver, my husband Rick, there are spots to check out a sinkhole and other formations like Submarine Rock where you can park and do a short hike.
This particular trail does require a lot of skill to maneuver through the undulations. There is the "Devil's Staircase" which is hard to go down without hitting the side. We used to take everyone who came to visit on one or two, four-wheel trail drives. I would now recommend that our friends go to Pink Jeep for their tour!
Here are more pics and a video that is very well done and shows what it is really like to go four-wheeling in Sedona! It is not for the faint of heart!
The two "boys" are my sons. This image was shot in 2005! How time flies. All these images are taken on Broken Arrow Trail.
Lower Image is Chicken Point with Stunning Views
Toward Big Park and Village of Oak Creek
Chicken Point above is the end of the 4 wheel drive trail but mountain biking and hiking do not stop there! In fact, some major daredevil bike rides (riding the White Line) have been filmed in this area.
