Mobile First Indexing: Is your Web performing per Google?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with John Henry Masterworks Design International, Inc. 13013

I am not an IT specialist or computer nerd.  If you have seen this on AR please let me know so that I can take this blog down.

In the past 4 months, I have been looking at my Google Analytics and noticing that several of my webs have slowly flatlined due to a new algorithm that Google is using to rate all webs.

Their idea is (to the best of my understanding) that what mobile phones and gadgets pick up from the internet the easiest and fastest, with the clearest formatting, is now the new standard for measuring your analytics!

I am concerned that this will affect ranking in general and SERPs.  Unless I have this wrong, cell phones now are the most used electronic devices searching the internet and how your web is formatted, how quickly images and content downloads, how clear your forms and other information is read, the higher the value of your web.

This new algorithm does not necessarily measure the quality of your content though.  I don't see how.

Are we dumbing down our video feeds, images, and descriptions in order to get brownie points when a smart phone can best download that information on its 3 x6 inch screen??

Anyone out there who knows what is going on, please explain this.

I am not looking forward to redesigning my webs in order to be found instantaneously and downloaded quickly on a cell phone.

Hi John- I'm clearly no SEO specialist or even a novice but you're right in that most everyone is using their smartphone for traveling along the internet. I'm going to come back to see if those in the know can answer.

This is from Google's site:

  • If you have a responsive site or a dynamic serving site where the primary content and markup is equivalent across mobile and desktop, you shouldn't have to change anything.
  • If you have a site configuration where the primary content and markup is different across mobile and desktop, you should consider making some changes to your site.
    • Make sure to serve structured markup for both the desktop and mobile version.

Sites can verify the equivalence of their structured markup across desktop and mobile by typing the URLs of both versions into the Structured Data Testing Tool and comparing the output.

When adding structured data to a mobile site, avoid adding large amounts of markup that isn't relevant to the specific information content of each document.
    • Use the robots.txt testing tool to verify that your mobile version is accessible to Googlebot.
    • Sites do not have to make changes to their canonical links ; we'll continue to use these links as guides to serve the appropriate results to a user searching on desktop or mobile.

Good morning John - as one of my friends paraphases the old butter commercial, "It's not nice to fool mother Google."  That sums its up.  Content should be worth something!

I find this very confusing. I don't want to have to change my website either and found the description in your comment confusing also. I hope someone who knows more than me can weigh in!

We have a web specialist who manages our main website, I'll have to run this by him. Darn Google is always messing with us.

John Henry

Great to see you! Would not take down your post. I would however try to share it on other web site sites.  Please try to make a presence at our Zoom meeting when Ben and the developers will be there as you can ask this question. I have also asked this question myself about SEO. Bob Stewart was at the last meeting he also asked about SEO.

Glad Kathy  Featured  this as I missed it

Interesting question, from your comment, it seems as if your mobile site needs to behave like your laptop site, well above my paygrade, but something i always ask is will this work on phones as well as laptops.

That makes sense John, but interesting we haven't heard that Google is using that data for relevant SEO.  Here we go again!

John, I saw the same thing a few months ago, and reached out to my web host.  They said speed is huge now, and they recommended changing the picture sizes for loading speed.  That took a WEEK!   Have not seen much change, so wish we knew!
