There is no time like spring time in the Keys. The islands come alive with flora and fauna and the waters surrounding our islands are teeming with great fishing opportunities. May is always an attractive month for anglers to come try their skills fighting the 'silver king' - - the tarpon.
My move to Key West in August 1996 was mainly to go fishing. I moved here from southern Connecticut and my first trip to the Keys was in the early 90s. I had never seen clear water before and fell in love with the charm of the island and friendly people. My first job was at the Key West Citizen, the only daily newspaper in the Keys. I am a graphic artist by trade so I got a job, rented my place in Connecticut and moved down to Key West. I never looked back.
There is plenty to be thankful for here in paradise. On any given day I am driving down the Keys in the early morning looking frequently in the rear view mirror to see the sunrise. The light cast across the shallow water and mangrove islands is perfect. This view each morning is a reminder of how lucky I am to live here.
What I love most about spring in the Keys is the weather starts to become more consistant. The cold fronts are gone for now. We have our rain showers like most places, but they come and go pretty quickly. A quick walk around Old Town Key West reveals so many beautiful blooming flowers. Plumeria or frangiapani are among the most noticable in their vibrant yellow, coral pink and red varieties. The Royal Poinciana is preparing to bloom come the summer months. It's fiery red-orange flowers canopy the streets of Key West.
The air is cool in the morning but quickly heats up once the sun comes over the horizon. I have grown to love the heat. You have to if you intend to live here year-round.
The signs of spring here in the Keys may be subtle to visitors. It may already seem like summer to them. In my eye, any day it reaches over 88 degrees can be considered summer.
So your next visit to Key West please take the time to walk the streets of Old Town in the morning or evening and take notice of the beauty this tiny city has to offer. From architecure to people to beautiful flora there is much to see in the spring in Key West.
