Not So Wordless Wednesday: Peonies, Another Sign of Spring!

By

The peony or paeony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. Peonies are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientists differ on the number of species that can be distinguished, ranging from 25 to 40, although the current consensus is 33 known species.Wikipedia

"And the wind upon its way whispered the boughs of May, And touched the nodding peony flowers to bid them waken."

~ Siegfried Sassoon

I spotted a couple bouquets of peonies at the Bristol Farm Market in Santa Barbara.  They begin to bloom Mid-May through mid June in our area.  The early birds pictured above must have bloomed in a greenhouse.

Happy Wednesday to Everyone!

Love! This is one I do not see here in FL. I wonder if it grows here?

Those are beautiful Ron and Alexandra Seigel

I've always enjoyed peonies, and the varieties there are; we always had multiple plants at our houses back in New England and I miss them.

Hi Ron and Alexandra- I love peonies...in fact, I love saying the word peony!!!! I don't think they do well in the south, though.

My mother was fond of peonies, and she often grew them.  They aren't as common here in Sacramento though.  We aren't blessed with the Goldilocks zone of weather you have where you are.

I LOVE peonies! I have some growing right outside my front door. It makes me happy when I pull up to my house and see my front garden in bloom. I expect my peonies to open up in about 3 weeks or so.

Andrea Bedard Lucky you.  My dad had a row of them in Minnesota.  Some blooms were almost the size of a dinner plate...beautiful reddish pink.  A

Myrl Jeffcoat The ones that we see here come from greenhouses, or at the Farmers Market from parts of the state that have colder weather.  They don't grow here.  A

Hello Alexandra and Ron - these peonies(I didn't realize the different spellings) certainly announce a very special Spring Awakening.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... who could resist peonies? I know I can't. I used to buy them for my mother on Mother's Day... she also loved them.

So pretty, I used to grow them at another house. For some reason, just haven't found the right spot for them here.  Thanks for lovely photo.
