I'll have a Caesar's salad

There is a question I am sure I once saw in Wayne’s daily trivia, that I have long known the answer to. Something that catches some folks by surprise.

Many people love a good Caesar salad. However, this salad is not as Italian in origin as you may think. Yes, the man who created it was Italian, however his restaurant was in Tijuana, Mexico.

One day, when I was in my 20s, my girlfriend and I took her brother on a trip through Tijuana just before he shipped off to boot camp. We were tourists. We were dressed in jeans and t-shirts. We were getting hungry for lunch and when we entered into Caesar’s Restaurant, it took us less than 10 seconds to realize that we were not properly dressed. The host stopped us. He wouldn’t hear of us feeling uncomfortable. He welcomed us in as if we were going into his home. They treated us so very well and the food was absolutely delicious.

And when I get to San Diego to see my mom, there is a restaurant in Bonita called Romesco’s. They will actually go through the show of making the Caesar’s salad at your table. My mom just loves that. It makes her feel special when they go through all the show of making it tableside.

Funny thing about Caesar’s salad, I guess it’s history and my family’s history with it meant more to me than I realized.

Rocky I always love history lessons especially when it is food related. Now with that said I have had a few times similar incidents where I was dressed casually but the protocol in the restaurant was jacket and tie.... well go figure the host and hostess magically conjured up a jacket and tie:)) one was in Boston and one was in Bel Air and I will just leave it at that:)Endre

Nothing like a bit of history and storytelling where food...good food...is involved! I love a good Caesar Salad!

A chef preparing food at the table is a special treat and very memorable Rocky Dickerson. The Oasis in Mesquite, Nevada had a fine restaurant in their casino called Redd's (named after the owner's wife) and they would prepare the freshest salad tableside and Banana's Flambe for dessert. Yum, thanks for bringing about another fun memory of way back when!

Rocky I have been to Tijuana, but back then I had other things on my mind besides Caesar salad.  Is that restaurant still there?
