There is a question I am sure I once saw in Wayne’s daily trivia, that I have long known the answer to. Something that catches some folks by surprise.
Many people love a good Caesar salad. However, this salad is not as Italian in origin as you may think. Yes, the man who created it was Italian, however his restaurant was in Tijuana, Mexico.
One day, when I was in my 20s, my girlfriend and I took her brother on a trip through Tijuana just before he shipped off to boot camp. We were tourists. We were dressed in jeans and t-shirts. We were getting hungry for lunch and when we entered into Caesar’s Restaurant, it took us less than 10 seconds to realize that we were not properly dressed. The host stopped us. He wouldn’t hear of us feeling uncomfortable. He welcomed us in as if we were going into his home. They treated us so very well and the food was absolutely delicious.
And when I get to San Diego to see my mom, there is a restaurant in Bonita called Romesco’s. They will actually go through the show of making the Caesar’s salad at your table. My mom just loves that. It makes her feel special when they go through all the show of making it tableside.
Funny thing about Caesar’s salad, I guess it’s history and my family’s history with it meant more to me than I realized.
