What will I do with all these masks?

Masks

Yesterday was a milestone in our efforts to return to pre-pandemic life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the first step in easing mask-wearing guidance for fully vaccinated people allowing them to stop wearing masks outdoors in crowds, and in most indoor settings.

In certain crowded settings like buses, planes, hospitals, prisons, and homeless shelters, the mask requirement will remain in place. As we go forward and the impact of the virus subsides, I expect to see an additional easing of mask requirements.

I was able to fly this past week, just days before the change, and everyone on the plane complied, some reluctantly, with the mask requirement.

But masks alone have never been enough to stem the spread of communicable diseases. One thing the pandemic did provide was additional guidance on cleaning and sanitizing common areas that are used repeatedly. I am hopeful restaurants and stores continue to maintain clean environments, especially bathrooms.

In the 1906 novel, The Jungle, author Upton Sinclair described the filthy conditions that were present at the time in the Chicago Stockyards. At one point in the book describing the main character washing in a stream after months of never bathing. Today, it is hard to imagine bathing in a stream as means to clean ourselves. It was no wonder people died at an early age.

But getting back to the mask thing. It seems we may have inadvertently created a secondary problem. Every public venue has adopted the use of masks. Conversely, every store has stocked up on a wide variety of masks. Masks of all types. Cloth, paper, synthetic, plastic shields, etc.

I personally have a fairly large stockpile of masks. I purchased them to use at showings and open houses, along with a stash of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.

What will happen to all those masks? I do not want to throw them away. Maybe they will become a fashion statement?

In the movie, The Princess Bride the main character, Westley, always wore a mask. He was quoted as saying: "It's just that masks are terribly comfortable -- I think everyone will be wearing them in the future."

Was Westley wrong?

At this point, I can only wait and see. Shakespeare once said: “To be, or not to be?” If he were alive today, he might say: “To mask, or not to mask? That is the question.”

I'm keeping a few of my silk favs. You never know, and some businesses may lag a bit in stepping up to the new guidelines. Also, airline travel makes me cringe at times...perhaps, wearing a mask onboard is not a bad idea.

I've been ready for these to be a thing of the past for over a year.  More than over masks.

I asked myself the words in your title line just this morning.  I have masks that are color coordinated to many of the clothes I wear.  Yet, some of them have never been worn, and may never be.

Good morning Joseph. A mask on my pocket will be on the agenda for some time to come. The Chicago rules are a bit confusing and the mask, according to Chicago science, is still necessary. Enjoy your day.

Keep them in the event you need to saw up wood and want to keep the dust out of your nose/mouth. Or keep them for the next pandemic so you're ready. :-)

Just because I'm vaccinated doesn't mean I want to stop wearing masks. There are way too many people out there who tell everyone proudly that they are NOT getting vaccinated.  That's their right, it's a personal choice. But I'm not taking a chance around them. I have had friends get COVID and it's not pretty.

I don't see myself being mask free any time soon. I'm quite happy wearing mine in public places and don't look forward to returning to maskless society...especially since so many people have chosen to not get the shot.

Interesting discussion. My son is working in Southern California, and he says what people do with them there is throw them away in parking lots.

Lucky to live where masks have for the most part not been an issue.

Good evening Joseph Domino 480-390-6011 ,

Yes I have boxes of masks, disposable and cloth. I've been vaccinated since February as my whole family. I will keep them in the car in case a business still wants them own but otherwise I will not be wearing a mask. I'm protected..its the ones who don't want to be vaccinated that have the problem. Great post glad Kathy Streib  featured it in her "Ah-Ha moments for the week.

Joseph it is really sad, when the Pandemic Started people wanted to help each other as time went on the politicians worked on dividing the people.... you know the old saying Divide & Conquer? I have tons of mask and the way Los Angeles and CA is who knows we might still need them.... now as to the Vaccine.... oh that is another subject....Endre

People being people, the masks and sanitizers will be around for a while at least.  There will always be people that are just too timid to walk outside without one

I think the reason I had  pneumonia which I got over with three weeks ago was from wearing a mask.

I wear my mask to the stores.  I had my J&J shot last week. I see too many maskes in parking lots. Unfortunately they'll end up in landfils. I'll keep a few masks as they might be worth something 20 years from now.

That's a good question!  Although the mask mandate has been lifted in our area, I'm still planning on wearing mine in public places.

We still have to wear masks in stores, except Target and Home Depot. I am over it, fresh air feels good. Fresh air and sunshine bring it on.
