May 2021 Vacation: Shingletown, California

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

On Thursday, Gail & I left Eugene and headed to Shingletown to spend time with Gail's nephew and his wife.

How many of you have ever heard of Shingletown or know where Shingletown is? I suspect even some of the California folks have never heard of it. It's about 30 miles due east of Redding on Hwy 44. That is the road to Lassen National Park.

Shingletown's history is steeped in the logging industry.  It was originally named Shingle Camp because it was a mill for cutting roofing slats harvested from the many large pines, firs, and cedar trees in the area. It is my understanding that most of the roofing material was provided to miners during the Gold Rush era.  So, there's your history trivia for the day.  On to the fun stuff.

Anthony & Lisa moved to Shingletown from Sacramento about 3 years ago. The lifestyle is totally different... and I mean totally.  They LOVE it!  They live in a lovely one-level home on a wooded lot in the Shasta Forest Village housing community.   There are fun street names like Thumper Drive, Tinkerbell Lane, Bambi Drive, Sleepy Lane, and Chip n Dale Drive.

The weather was amazing and we spent almost no time in the house except in the morning drinking coffee and in the evening when we went to bed.  On both Thursday and Friday evenings, we spent time around the firepit drinking wine and talking. I think Anthony was drinking something besides wine.  Captain Morgan and Sprite I think.   Anyway, this guy knows how to start a fire in a firepit. There were no flint or matches involved. There is no time to waste when building a fire in Tony's backyard. He throws in the wood and uses a blowtorch! Instant fire.

On Saturday we went to Lassen Park. Part of the road was still closed due to snow so we settled in for a picnic lunch at Manzanita Lake.  We ate our sandwiches and watched a Bluejay stalk us waiting for our crumbs.  After our lunch, we walked part of the way around the lake and collected a few large pine cones to bring home.

We went to dinner at Kahuna's Mongolian BBQ & Sushi restaurant down toward Redding. It was yummy and Lisa shared some of her sushi with us. Believe it or not, that is the first time I'd ever eaten sushi. It has never really appealed to me but it was quite good and I wouldn't hesitate to have it again.

Back to the house for more fire, wine, and roasting of marshmallows.

Thanks, Tony & Lisa for showing us a good time! Consider yourselves warned... we'll be back!

Hello Carol - thank you for the introduction to Shingletown - there's always room to learn more about California.  And the planners of the town obviously had a sense of humor when planning street names which only adds to its charm and history.

Hey Carol, really am drawn to the photo of  the camp fire. Although, it's nice we can head down to our fire pit and pretend we're on vacation! It's been so enjoyable to read about your road trip. D

Morning Carol.

Just the other day my wife asked if we go on another long trip where would I like to go.  Without hesitation I said, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington State.

Good morning, Carol... okay... I'll admit it... I'd never heard of Shingletown until just now. What wonderful photos and what wonderful memories you made while you were there. Mongolian BBQ and Sushi certainly sounds like an "interesting" combination. (I have tried sushi and am not repeating the experience. I still get kidded that when I was in Tokyo I ate Italian food!)

That sounds like an amazing visit. I laughed at the blow torch - that would certainly get the fire started. And sushi! I love it - I'm glad you were open to the experience.

Enjoy your Sunday!
