Observations on the Pandemic Lockdown and the ramifications on life and business: from a Beverly Hills Realtor’s perspective
Here we are in the 15th month of the Pandemic Lockdown of the Greater Los Angeles area. It has created many problems on all levels. The effects are too numerous to mention here. As we all know families, small businesses, large business, simply stated everyone was affected by it, one way or another. The financial hardships this caused on many small businesses and individuals is unconscionable. The ramifications and ripple effect that it created on so many lives, is just tragic. How many businesses closed forever?
Many people had financial hardships, others had emotional and relationship hardships. I am grateful that I am in a stable relationship and Diane and I had made numerous adjustments. Primarily, since we both have been working from home. there were life and business modifications that had to be considered.
Our pets benefited the most, since we were and are both showering them with added attention than previously. Simply, because we were spending all the time with them and not going anywhere. I joke around with people who see me walking Holly in our neighborhood, that Diane and I are competing who can walk her.
An example of one change we faced in the first few months of the lockdown, consisted of our driving habits. I could drive from LAX to the Hollywood Hills in 15 minutes, one of the nice side effects of the Pandemic Shutdown. It was as if they turned the time back fifty years for driving purposes. Keep in mind I was not violating the Pandemic Shutdown, since the powers to be, decide after the fact that ‘Real Estate was an essential business’.
As time went on, more and more people started ignoring the shutdown. Some businesses started returning to limited operations. Then add to this, the people who were tired of being “locked down” and next thing you know, this had a huge effect on Los Angeles Traffic.
As I have been driving from my home to the various listing viewings in the past three months, I saw that traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels. The simple translation is, that going for six to ten miles can take up to 45 minutes or more, just like prior to the Pre-Pandemic shutdown days.
Now add to this, for the past five days we have been inundated with ’easing up of restriction memos’ from the same people who have scared us and forced us to work from home and stay home. The message is “… now everything is fine, and you can go back to pre-pandemic lifestyle and business style…”!
After scaring everyone to the point of being afraid to meet family members and relatives in their homes. Everything is fine now? Seriously, now you can live life again as if nothing happened?
My take is, that the politicians and some of the power players in the background overreacted in the beginning and now are overreacting again. I do not know about you, but when I must cough or sneeze due to the pollen, allergens and pollution that is out there, I feel guilty. People might get scared that I have Covid-19. How do you feel when you see a stranger 20 ft away sneezing and coughing? Do you want to go to that person and ask if he has his Vaccine Passport?
It took months for people to get so afraid and accept, that this was the deadliest Pandemic in our lifetime. I suspect it will take longer for people to get back to the lifestyle and work activities pre-Pandemic levels in California and in particularly Los Angles County.
Somehow, I have a difficult time believing, that the barrage of Memos from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Officer, who has been pushing out these memos since May 11,2021 will reassure everyone.
The good news is, we have learned to conduct Real Estate and other activities during this Pandemic Shutdown with personal hygiene at an elevated level. I noticed people do not cough on other people and more handwashing has become the norm.
Now with that said stay safe and be safe.
