Observations on the Pandemic Lockdown and the ramifications on life and business:  from a Beverly Hills Realtor’s perspective

www.endrebarath.com

Here we are in the 15th month of the Pandemic Lockdown of the Greater Los Angeles area. It has created many problems on all levels. The effects are too numerous to mention here. As we all know families, small businesses, large business, simply stated everyone was affected by it, one way or another. The financial hardships this caused  on many small businesses and individuals is unconscionable. The ramifications and ripple effect that it created on so many  lives, is just tragic. How many businesses closed forever?

Many people had financial hardships, others had emotional and relationship hardships. I am grateful that I am in a stable relationship and Diane and I had made numerous adjustments. Primarily, since  we both have been working from home. there were life and business modifications that had to be considered.

www.endrebarath.com

Our pets benefited  the most, since we  were and are both showering them with added attention than previously. Simply, because we were spending all the time with them and not going anywhere. I joke around with people who see me walking Holly in our neighborhood, that Diane and I are competing who can walk her.

An example of one change we faced in the first few months of the lockdown, consisted of our driving habits. I could drive from LAX to the Hollywood Hills in 15 minutes, one of the nice side effects of the Pandemic Shutdown. It was as if they turned the time back fifty years for driving purposes. Keep in mind I was not violating the Pandemic Shutdown, since the powers to be, decide after the fact  that ‘Real Estate was an essential business’.

As time went on,  more and more people started ignoring the shutdown.  Some businesses started returning to limited operations. Then add to  this, the people who were tired of being “locked down” and next thing you know, this had a huge effect on Los Angeles Traffic.

www.endrebarath.com

As I  have been driving from my home to the various listing viewings in the past three months, I saw that traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels.  The simple translation is, that going for six  to ten miles can take up to 45 minutes or more, just like  prior to the Pre-Pandemic shutdown days.

www.endrebarath.com

Now add to this, for the past five days we have been inundated with ’easing up of restriction memos’ from the same people  who have scared us and forced us to work from home and stay home. The message is “… now everything is fine, and you can go back to pre-pandemic lifestyle and business style…”!

After scaring everyone  to the point of being afraid to meet family members and relatives in their homes. Everything is fine now? Seriously, now you can live life again as if nothing happened?

My take is, that the politicians and some of the power players in the background overreacted in the beginning and now are overreacting again. I do not know about you, but when I must cough or sneeze due to the pollen, allergens  and pollution that is out there, I feel guilty. People might get scared that I have Covid-19. How do you feel when you see a stranger 20 ft away sneezing and coughing? Do you want to go to that person and ask if he has his Vaccine Passport?

www.endrebarath.com

It took months for people to get so afraid  and accept, that this was the deadliest Pandemic in our lifetime. I suspect it will take longer for people to get back to the lifestyle and work activities pre-Pandemic levels in California and in particularly  Los Angles County.

Somehow, I have a difficult time believing, that the barrage of Memos from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Officer, who  has been pushing out these memos since May 11,2021  will reassure everyone.

The good news is, we have learned to conduct Real Estate and other activities during this Pandemic Shutdown with personal hygiene at an elevated level. I noticed people do not cough on other people and more handwashing has become the norm.

Now with that said stay safe and be safe.

Our fur babies have LOVED the entire pandemic: more walks, more treats and total attention.

Us humans crave the interaction and seeing people smile and looking at their faces.  We need to get back to some semblance  to our own "normal", whatever that really means.

One of the silver linings of this pandemic is it forced companies to adapt to technology that was already available (i.e. Zoom, Screen sharing, digitial signatures, mobile banking, etc.).

My son works at Blue Cross and they quickly had employee's start working remotely from home.  His department, like many, admitted that employee productivity actually increased.

Great post Endre Barath, Jr.   The whole process made me wonder what is real and what has been slight of hand and a silver tongue.   My heart goes out to all who have suffered and lost--no winners in this one.

Will Hamm  indeed it is not about politics, nor about the vaccine it is about the emotional frame of mind of each individual.... here in California we were shut down for almost 15 months and in the beginning it was hard... now the opposite is taking place all of a sudden  "green light all good to go" many people are now emotionally not ready to go back to business as usual...Endre

Jim Paulson  yes same story here Diane does not need to commute that is three hours saved and she rolls out of bed feeds the animals and starts working via zoom, and emails... needless to say now it is an emotional adjustment again...when the fake scientists, self serving politicians with their own agenda are saying "all is well" get your arse back to work:)) it makes an intelligent person pause:))Endre

Hello Endre,  I don't even want to get started on my feelings towards 'Covid 19' political BS.  I will bring forth a nice plus I believe resulting from shut downs which you hinted towards.  I had not been to local shelter to stroll the pens and say hello for over a year and went in the other day.  They housed 100's of dogs, as a non kill shelter, when I last went thru.  Capacity still the same.  But when I asked to visit the lost buddies I was told there were 23 three I could view.  Endre you mentioned your buddies benefitting from the extra time.  I believe the large reduction in shelter pets directly due to Covid shut downs and people having time.  One of the ripples you mention that I certainly would not have guessed.  And don't play games with your wife, wrestle that leash from her if it is your turn to walk em.  lol  Take care, Mark

I also remember the traffic at the beginning of shutdown..although I could never endure traffic like LA has!  But what I remember was driving around for an essential errand and the streets had so few cars...it was like Christmas morning.
