May 2021 Vacation: Bend, Oregon

Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

Our next destination in Bend was really just a stop-over point on our way back to Wenatchee.  We could have driven a long day and gotten home in a one-day drive but we wanted to spend the morning with Tony & Lisa before the last leg of our trip. Bend, Oregon is about 1/2 way to Wenatchee from Shingletown so that's where we planned to stay on Saturday night.

We enjoyed a leisurely morning and a nice breakfast with T&L and then headed north toward Bend. The day was an easy and uneventful drive. We arrived in Bend in the late afternoon.  We checked into the Red Lion Inn & Suites, which was conveniently located on Hwy 97, our route home.

When we left Oregon a few days prior there was no inside dining so we weren't sure what the availability of dining would be when we got into Central Oregon. We both had leftovers from our dinner at Kahuna's the night before so Lisa packed them nicely in ice for us to take along. Fortunately, our room had a microwave and we enjoyed leftovers for dinner in our room.

This hotel was another example of no coffee in the room so we had to wait until 6:00 for the lobby to open to get coffee.   When prompted to do so, I wrote a Google review on my stay. I indicated that the accommodations were very nice but we were disappointed that we had to wait to get morning coffee. They replied back to my review that all we had to do was let them know we wanted coffee earlier and they would have opened the lobby for us.  Seems like that could have been something they told us on check-in.  Another COVID excuse for cutting services I guess.  We did get our coffee, took our time packing up, and headed home.

It was another leisurely drive day. Gail had never driven through the town of Toppenish, Washington where they have murals painted on the exterior wall of buildings all throughout the town.  That link will provide a lot more quality photos of the murals around town than I took. This mural project was started in 1989 as a result of receiving seed money from the state in celebration of Washington's centennial.

We arrived in Wenatchee mid-afternoon on Sunday, May 9th. Gail lives in Spokane so we had time to get the car unpacked so she could get organized for her drive home on Monday morning.

It was a fun trip. This was a good warm-up for a much longer solo trip I have planned for the coming Fall.

Carol, that would have upset me, need coffee ASAP in the am!   When I book a hotel, I ALWAYS check to be sure they have an in-room maker, or would have asked the front desk.  Other than that, sounds like you had a great time.

Hello Carol,  I love my coffee first thing in the morning.

Even though you did not know you needed to ask for coffee before 6 am when the lobby opened, I enjoyed joining you and Gail on your road trip.

I love that mural. It is fun discovering them along the way.  I enjoy eating in my hotel room when I traveled before the trailer. Not a coffee drinker so that wouldn't have mattered to me. Look forward to hearing about your Fall trip.

I really enjoy time in Bend. So many fun shops. We love to stay at the Pine Ridge Inn - river views and great service. And, as I recall, hot coffee early! So enjoy reading the travel log - fun trip.

I don't know why, but that photo of you eating on the bed reminded me of a trip I made to NYC in 2008.  On my last day there, a major rain storm blew in, and didn't make sight seeing that day a good idea.  However, it didn't really matter because I was exhausted from my 10 days of travels and saw it as a day to unwind in my room, and rest before the plane trip back home to California.  I remember going downstairs to the cafe, ordering up a big breakfast, taking it back upstairs to my room, immediately getting back into my pajamas, and just root and foraging in bed all day!  I loved it!

You guys really saw and did a lot in just a short week!   Sure sounded like a lot of fun minus the covid stupid stuff (excuses).   Precurser for sure for the big trek next fall.  Hope you end up in Phoenix!

Carol- if this is a preview of your posts for your solo Fall trip...I can't wait!!!  And I have to echo what Sharon Tara said...I can totally relate to eating leftovers on your bed in a hotel room. When I traveled for work, I was so tired at the end of the day that I had no desire to eat out.

Oh boy! You packed a lot into a short vacation, didn't you, Carol! Love the mural and seeing the buildings with them would have been something I would have enjoyed also. Thanks for taking us along on your trip!

As for the coffee, you need to buy yourself a mini Keurig to pack in your suitcase! I have to have it first thing in the morning...and most of the day too! LOL

Dear Carol,

Sounds like a good trip minus the coffee. Nice high desert country. The trees have a special smell there.
